E-prescribing gives providers an important tool to safely and efficiently manage patients' medications. Compared to paper or fax prescriptions, e-prescribing improves medication safety, better management of medications costs, improved prescribing accuracy and efficiency, increase practice efficiency while improving health care quality and reducing health care costs through the reduction of adverse drug events and increased prescribing of generic medications.

 Improves patient safety and quality of care  Reduces time on phone calls/faxing requests  Increases patient convenience  Increases medication compliance  Improving formulary adherence permits lower cost drug costs

Stage 1Stage 2 Objective Generate and transmit permissible prescriptions electronically (eRx) Measure More than 40% of all permissible prescriptions written by the EP are transmitted electronically using certified EHR technology More than 50% of all permissible prescriptions written by the EP are compared to at least one drug formulary and transmitted electronically using Certified EHR Technology

 Uses HL7  BENEFITS  Enables inpatient facilities using HL7 enabled systems to electronically communicate prescriptions for patients that are discharged  Enables outpatient facilities using HL7-based prescription tools to write prescriptions that are delivered to the retail pharmacy for dispensing  Allows pharmacies to communicate refill or renewal requests to prescribers from NCPDP SCRIPT messages that are then mapped to HL7 messages  Enables inpatient facilities and prescribers to receive NCPDP SCRIPT fill notification messages from pharmacies, providing patient compliance information
