GLOVE BOX For HADRON Blind Detector Upgrade for Phenix Richard W Hutter,5 July 2005 with thanks to Bill Anderson

ISOLATION

Design Factors What is the Environment What Needs To Be Done in the Box How Will it be Done

GLOVEBOX SPECITICATIONS Type: Dry Nitrogen Glove Box – H2O <10pmm, Particle Level <100/m3, Dehumidification Column with HEPA filtration, Monitoring Instruments H2O, O2, Pressure Pressure Range +- 10milbar, N2, leakage 0.05%vol/h, N2 Flow +250 l/Hr N2 From Boil off From Liquid N2, with Backup Cylinders Automatically engaged Overpressure Vent, 4 Swagelock Fittings on each end to control gas Flow According to work. Size Interior, –Length 3m Min, –Width 1.2 MAX, –Height 1.3 Min –Approx. Vol. 4.7m3 Note: Interior Deck Space provides 3 working sections Storage [Middle] Gem Working area [Next to airlock] HBD Assembly [Hatch] Hatch 1m x 1m min For HBD Movement Air lock [or Transfer Chamber] Gem Shipping Box, and CsI Deposition Transfer Case can Pass Thru. [Maybe Pumpable,if not the a Pump Through System maybe used] 46 cm to 60cm Dia., Fitted with N2 Feed, Exhaust, KF-40mm Vacuum, and H2O Measurement Feedthroughs Panels Located at Box ends –120VAC- 2 quad outlet Boxes with Power Strips, –Signal & HV, Gases on replaceable Panels –Gases on replaceable Panels {Secondary Feedthrough panel for Amplification Testing located at the center position Signal, HV, Gases & Vacuum } Lighting Exterior and Interior Spot lighting Glove Ports – Sealable, 8 Pairs of Glove ports 6 pairs set evenly along the length of The Box, the 7th and 8th set above the 2 pairs nearest the hatch, Which is were we will assemble the HBD

GLOVE BOX SETUP for Operations The Glove box is setup and tested for Humidity [<10pmm } and particles Levels <100/m3 In The Glove Box – The HBD Vessel, Handling Cradle, A fixture which allows the HBD Vessel to be Rotated about its short axis so that the section being installed Is always in the lowest position [we do not have to reach up with Our gloved hands this way and will provide the Vessel Protection] Hardware and Tools needed to install the Gem Stacks into the Vessel. Sides of the HBD Vessel and all Hardware needed to install them N2 Air Gun Small vacuum cleaner with filtration on exhaust GEM Stack Storage, sealable Box for 24 GEMS with independent N2 [It may Be Possible to Use Shipping Boxes for This] Spot lights on Flexible Shafts Amplification Stainless Steel Test Vessel with Fe55 Source. Transfer Box for CsI Deposition-Gas tight Dry Box for moving the CsI layer of the GEM Stack to Deposition Station and back to Glove Box, Equipped with Gas feeds. 6 to 12 Carriers - The carriers are to Hold the CsI layer –Providing Mechanical Support and Electrical connections during Deposition and Quantum Efficiency Testing. In Modules containing 6 carriers.

Tentative Procedures for Handling GEM Stacks / HBD Glove Box Shipped items received From Weizmann, Exterior Packaging removed GEM Shipping container moved into Clean Room Tent. Exterior of box is wiped down and Placed in Airlock for Drying Out. NOTE: if a pump down Air Lock System is used the Shipping Box will Have to have a valve opened just before sealing the airlock Once dried to same conditions in Glove Box Interior Hatch is opened Shipping container moved into GEM Working area and unpacked the Gem are placed into Storage Box if Nessary. Shipping Box is removed through Airlock. GEM are Tested for Amplification using the Stainless steel Vessel using Fe55 Source. Once Testing for Amplification Testing is done,The CsI Layer will be mounted into a carrier, when 6 Carriers are Installed, they will be assembled into a Module Which will then be placed into Transfer Box and Taken Through the Airlock for Deposition and Quantum Efficiency Testing. When Deposition and Testing are done the Transfer Box is returned through Airlock the CsI Layers are removed From Carries and Reinstalled into GEM Stacks Which are then placed Back into Storage Box. What next Happens Exactly will depends on rates of Production and Timing, we may put the GEM stacks in as they are ready or wait until we have enough to fill the HBD Vessel in the Glove Box All at once. Once the Vessel is populated we should test all electrical Connections for Continuity, then Closed the Vessel and run a Pressure Leak Test. Open Hatch and Remove Vessel. Complete any Testing.
