Main Objectives n Scientific objectives are n NEMO model improvement n wave-current interaction sensitivity experiments n nesting into the GLOBAL-MFC operational products n variational assimilation of new data sets (float trajectories, SST and TAPAS) n sensitivity experiments to define the best configuration of the data assimilation scheme for the biogeochemical variables n increase of the horizontal resolution of Med-biogeochemistry (from 1/8° to 1/16°) n Operational objectives are n Upstream (internal with TAC/MFCs and external) management n Interaction with block C (WP15-Product Quality and WP16-CIS) n Simplify the Med-PC with a unique DU for Med-biogeochemistry and Med- currents and a DU for the backup n Technical objectives are n Improvement of the connection with the MyOcean Central Information System

System Evolution: master plan MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 MYO2-MED-MP-1.3.doc V3 and V4: two major evolution steps

System Evolution V2  V3 MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 n NEMO version upgrade (2.3  3.2) n WAM  WW-III and from 6hr to 1hr current-wave coupling n operational chain improvement (new linux cluster machine) n improvement of OPATM-BFM (carbonate system) n improvement of Chl assimilation n higher temporal resolution of Med-current rean (monthly & daily)

System Evolution V3  V4 MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 n Med-currents: n variational assimilation of SST n assimilation of Argo float trajectories n atmospheric pressure term in NEMO & TAPAS data assimialtion n Med-biogeochemistry: n increase of horizontal resolution (from 1/8 to 1/16)

New Med-REA ( ) Quality is under assessment, results compared to Adani et al 2011 Medsea PHYS reanalysis production for V3.x /V4 Evolutions scheduled for the second period: Complete production June 2013 Complete assessment October 2012  significant changes occurred with respect to foreseen activities due to necessary R&D developments that caused a delay in data transfer to OGS for the BIO reanalysis production

Med-biogeochemistry: March 27th 2013 forecast MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 SATELLITE MFS-BIO 27/03/13 5-day MODIS avg (25-29/03/13) mg Chl/m3 The system forecasted a bloom in the North West Med and in the North-Ionian sea.

Good skill assessment in each sub-basin.

Med-biogeochemistry: March 27th 2013 forecast MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 Phosphorus forecast for the 27/03/2013: upwelling processes in nwm and ion vertically transport to the surface that triggers the phytoplankton blooms

Med-biogeochemistry: March 27th 2013 forecast MyOcean2 First Annual Meeting – April 2013 Med-Biogeochemistry can reproduce other ecosystem variables and indicators. On the right, different Phytoplankton groups biomass are shown.  Indicator of biomass of different phytoplankton groups. The development of bio ecological indicators (based on BGC products) is pre- operationally in progress in other EC-FP7 projects (e.g. OPEC).
