14 September 2009 The transport system in 2025 double economic performance and half environmental impact

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Trends in society, influencing the transport system towards 2025 New demands for personal mobility Increase of freight transport Growth of CO2 emissions New safety and security needs Towards a more complex transport system Other ideas about trends???

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Challenges to the transport system in 2025 Increase transport system speed Increase transport system flexibility Meet the greening targets Develop robustness and reliability Management of transition Other ideas about challenges???

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 From trends via challenges to objectives Economy Environment Society Technology 2025 Transport trend 1 Transport trend 2 Transport trend 3 Transport trend 4 Transport trend 5 Transport challenges Transport research objectives

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Objectives of the joint programming activities Development of a sustainable system for mobility and transport: clean, reliable and safe Strenghten the performance of the main mobility and transport hubs for passengers and freight Other ideas about objectives?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 “What” questions to be adressed What can and/or should be done in (densely) populated areas to increase sustainability of mobility and transport activities, like: Integrated decision making by shippers and logistics service providers Effectiveness and reliability of seamless intermodal transport services Efficient use of new technologies that considerably reduce emissions Robustness and resilience of networks Other ideas about “What” questions?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 “How” questions to be addressed How can this be arrived at intermodal hubs by instruments like: Governance arrangements and spatial planning (including the interaction with decision making in global supply chains) Long term network design and the development of transport services on the network New technologies that are compatible with existing assets Instruments to influence choices and behaviour Other ideas about “how” questions?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Added value, benefits and impact Trends, challenges and research questions are relevant at alle levels of public government The EU FP is focussing on technology development and demonstration with a strong focus on modalities. There is an added value in taking a transport system approach, focussing on interconnection between transport modes at hubs Existing ERA-NET cooperation is focussing on linking components of national programmes and removing barriers for transnational cooperation. This approach should be complemented by a political incentive for the development of a common vision, common perspectives and common roadmaps Other ideas about added value, benefits and impact?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 National initiatives and stakeholders Netherlands: –Sustainable accessibility of the Randstad (minVenW; running to 2013) –Logistics and supply chains (minVenW and minEZ; preparation phase) Other countries about national initiatives and stakeholders?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Indicative national contributions Netherlands –25 Meuro earmarked by minVenW and MinEZ for “Logistics and supply chains” Other countries about national contributions?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 First reactions from other countries - 1 European Platform on Transport research (EPTR) and pre- meeting to PC Transport, 30 june 2009: ‘Joint programming’ is important if the whole of national programmes is compared to EU FP (Sweden and other countries) Clarification is needed to position ‘joint programming’ in relation to EU FP and ERA-NET, both on content as well as on process and procedures (Germany, France and other countries) ‘Joint programming’ is a starting point, but not yet clear enough as a concept for implementation (Sweden, Switserland, Spain and other countries indicated the need for close contact between national representatives in HLG and Transport programme committee) Focus and prioritisation of research questions is needed (Austria, Denmark, Finland and other countries)

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 First reactions from other countries - 2 Other reactions? Other countries?

Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat The transport system in September 2009 Next steps with other countries Stockholm, 22 (pre-meeting) and 23 (informal meeting): EU FP Programme Committtee Transport (including areonautics) The Hague, (26 and) 27 November 2009: ERA-NET Transport, High Level Group Early December 2009: ERA-NET Transport, Plenary Group together with representatives from ERA-NET Road, AirTN and Martec Other opportunities?
