Welcome to Rotary! But what is Rotary?

An organization of… Rotary Clubs who’s members are business, professional and community leaders, that volunteer in their communities and promote world understanding and peace.

Started on February 23, 1905 by Paul Harris and 3 of his friends They wanted an organization of honest businessmen with integrity. Their purpose was to form friendships, help each other in business and serve the community They allowed only one person from each business or profession They rotated their meetings from place to place each week. Their first service project was public toilets on Main Street in Chicago

The Classification System To Assure Diversity The classification system belongs to the club. It is based on: the business you are in; "What you do for a living," the principal activity of the business.  Five members are permitted to have the same classification in a club unless the club has more than 50 members in which up to 10% of the membership may hold the same classification. Slide B4-10

45 min 30 min Attendance Rules 1. A member should not miss 4 consecutive meetings without make up or without good and sufficient reason. Exceptions: a. A temporary leave of absence may be granted for circumstances. (Who grants this?) b. In cases of illness which is serious enough to preclude a member from attending the regular meetings 2. Attendance Rules 3. You must attend or make up at least 50% of your Club's scheduled meetings in each semi-annual period 4. Thirty percent of your attendance must be at your own Club. How does one make up a missed meeting? Slide B4-18

Requirements to be a Member Pay dues to Clubs Attendance – 1. Must maintain 50% attendance semi- annually 2. Must attend home club at lease 30% semi-annually Make-up missed meetings

Financial Responsibility of a Rotarian Your annual Club dues will include: $51.00 per year for RI dues $ 2.00 per year for Council on Legislation $12.00 per year for Rotary Magazine $ 5.44 per year for liability insurance $70.44 Total RI Yearly dues per member + $25.00 Per Year District Dues per member RI dues are paid semi-annually (July 1 and January 1) and district dues are paid annually (July 1)

Club Operating Fund Used for club and meeting expense only. Funds raised by fundraisers should never be used for club expenses unless you advertise that proceeds from a fundraiser can go to club operating expenses.

Termination Rules Reasons for possible termination by the club board: Failure to pay dues Members ceases to have qualifications for membership Terminated by 2/3 vote of board Resignation Slide B4-21
