- GLC 2000 Ispra STATUS OF SPOT VEGETATION  VEGETATION 2  NEW STANDARD PRODUCTS  VEGETATION 2002 Gilbert Saint - VEGETATION Programme Scientist

- GLC 2000 Ispra VEGETATION 2 vSame instrument as VEGETATION 1 with minor improvements on optics (less stray light, better detector homogeneity...) and to increase life time to 5 years vSPOT 5 having a star tracker, should provide better geometry without Ground Control Points (VGT 1 : 0.1 multispectral, 0.3 multitemporal for >90% pixels) vReady for launch, waiting for availability of launch pad : last known date is May 3rd vCommissionning phase should last 2 month, after which the two instruments will be available, VGT 2 as the principal one, VGT 1 to complement for special acquisitions.

- GLC 2000 Ispra NEW STANDARD PRODUCTS vFrom the beginning, Image Processing Center designed to accomodate for regular improvements of standard processing methods. New methods should be validated globally and accepted by a large community of users vThree improvements selected as a first set : Ÿcloud detection, cloud shadow… Ÿaerosol content correction Ÿbidirectional effects correction on syntheses vDevelopment based on : Ÿproposal of methods to various users and acceptance by IUC, Ÿtraining of algorithms on model, real VGT and Polder data sets, presentation and discussion in Belgirate VEGETATION 2000 Ÿextensive validation phase on real data : 10 months, global data processed by CTIV vActors : VITO & CESBIO

- GLC 2000 Ispra CLOUD SHADOW DETECTION B3 (SPOT4-VEGETATION) SAHARA. CLOUDS (light green) SHADOWS (magenta)

- GLC 2000 Ispra AEROSOL CORRECTION vBasis for the method : for dark targets, SWIR/Blue surface reflectance ratio was supposed to be constant. Analysis on first years of data, Aeronet stations measurements… showed that ratio was function of surface NDVI Operational algorithm developped as an approximation of a complete iterative solution. Validation of approximation done on VGT, Polder, Aeronet data. vComplete description available in proceedings of VEGETATION 2000

- GLC 2000 Ispra NEW STANDARD PRODUCTS CONCLUSION vAcceptance after long validation phase, vProduction began in May 2001 for validation : data are available from that date vNow waiting for next proposals for improvements … but two criteria Ÿvalidation Ÿacceptance by a large community

- GLC 2000 Ispra VEGETATION 2002 vAs a follow-on to VEGETATION 2000 in Belgirate, VEGETATION 2002Nov 19-22, 2002 Antwerp Belgium vOpen to presentations of any use of VEGETATION products, either for scientific or more applied purposes vParticular attention to VEGA 2000 and GLC 2000 results vTechnical news on quality of the two systems vFirst announcement in press, look after your (e)mail

- GLC 2000 Ispra OTHER MEANS FOR EXCHANGE : vSeveral VEGETATION Web sites with a common entry point : with several sections : technical, scientific, commercial vDiscussion forum available on the entry point : do not hesitate to ask questions, make proposals….
