Junior Saltire Prize Junior Green Energy Award Launched: December 2011

Skills Development Scotland Are you interested in making Scotland greener through greater use of renewable energy ? Following the success of the inaugural Junior Saltire Prize Awards in 2011 and to help raise the awareness of the opportunities that Scotland has to exploit its marine renewable potential, Skills Development Scotland is again funding the Junior Saltire Prize Awards 2012 for primary and secondary school pupils. The award is being managed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland. In April 2008 The Scottish Government set up The Saltire Prize, Scotland's £10 million challenge to accelerate the commercial development of marine energy. Scotland is particularly well-placed to do this given its history of technological innovation and its vast reserves of renewable potential. In addition to the Junior Saltire Prize Award an extra set of awards were created under the Junior Green Energy Awards programme and is also being sponsored by Skills Development Scotland. This programme has been designed to raise awareness and recognition of the range of excellent projects and challenges that Scottish schools have undertaken during within the renewable energy and climate change areas through CREST & Eco School programmes.

Skills Development Scotland This competition is open to all primary P6-P7 and secondary S1-S3, S4-S6 schools pupils in Scotland. Entry participation can be by a team or a whole class. Schools can submit multiple entries provided each is registered separately. After the closing date, a short-listed number of schools will be invited to attend Celebration of Engineering and Science which is hosted by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI). A maximum of 4 pupils will be allowed to represent each team / class at this Celebration event. This year’s event will be held on Friday 8th June 2012 at the Glasgow Science Centre. In addition to The Junior Saltire Award, an extra set of awards was created under the Junior Green Energy Awards programme that is being sponsored by Skills Development Scotland. Following the success of last year, once again this award category is open to Scottish primary and secondary schools who have successfully submitted renewable energy projects for the British Science Association's CREST Awards during the 2011/12 school year. This programme has been designed to raise awareness and recognition of the range of excellent projects and challenges that Scottish schools have undertaken during the last year within the renewable energy and climate change areas.

Skills Development Scotland Has your class or club submitted a Crest Award for an energy related project this year? Criteria: This is open to any Scottish school group that has submitted a Crest Award during the 2011/12 school year for an energy-related project. Examples of energy-related projects on the British Science Association (BSA) website include Wave Energy, Keeping the heat in, Solar hot water. For primary schools the Crest award category will be at the bronze level only. For secondary schools submissions at bronze, silver and gold levels will be eligible. A short listed number of schools will be selected by the Scottish Crest Area Co-ordinators from all the entries received by the closing date 30th April These schools will then receive a formal invitation from SCDI to attend their Celebration of Engineering and Science event in the Glasgow Science Centre on Friday 8th June Schools must be able to bring along examples of their work / award entry for display at the showcase event where a winner and runner-up will be selected for both primary and secondary schools. In addition to the Junior Saltire Prize Award an extra set of awards were created under the Junior Green Energy Awards programme that is being sponsored by Skills Development Scotland Following the success of last year, once again this award category is open to primary and secondary schools who have submitted projects to Eco-Schools Scotland during the 2011/12 school year. This programme has been designed to raise awareness and recognition of the range of excellent projects and challenges that Scottish schools have undertaken during the last year within the renewable energy and climate change areas.

Skills Development Scotland Criteria: This award is open to any school in Scotland that has successfully been awarded an Eco-Schools Green Flag during the 2011/12 school year (i.e. from August 2011 to end April 2012). The award will be given to schools in recognition of outstanding whole school project work specifically relating to the Eco-Schools Energy topic, one of nine topics that schools are asked to investigate as part of their Eco-Schools work. A short listed number of schools (3 primary + 3 secondary) will be selected by area co-ordinators at Eco- Schools Scotland from all schools awarded a Green Flag between August 2011 and 30th April The shortlisted primary and secondary schools will then receive a formal invitation from SCDI to attend their Celebration of Engineering and Science event in the Glasgow Science Centre on Friday 8th June Primary and Secondary schools will be required to bring along evidence and examples of their energy project work for display at the showcase event where a winner and highly recommended will be selected for each school category. Primary winner / highly commended prizes: £250 / £100 (respectively) Secondary winner / highly commended prizes: £500 / £200 (respectively) Prize money to be spent on further developing school’s Eco-Schools activities.
