Lent Appeal 2015 Who is your Social Neighbour? Learning Objectives: To explore different problems we could experience online To consider the possible consequences (outcomes) of these problems To reflect on how we can use Jesus' teachings to guide us online

Lent Appeal 2015 LOGO QUIZ! How many of these social media sites can you name?

Lent Appeal 2015 LOGO QUIZ! Did you know the name of the site? Or the minimum recommended age to use it? Facebook 13+ Twitter 13+ WhatsApp 16+ Instagram 13+ Yik Yak 17+ Snapchat 13+ Secret 12+ Whisper 17+

Lent Appeal 2015 Social media can be a brilliant way to connect with friends. However, sometimes social media can be used to intimidate and threaten. So... Social Media How can we avoid these situations? What can we do if something goes wrong?

Lent Appeal 2015 Scenarios What could be the consequences (outcomes) of each situation? Read through the following scenarios and answer the questions on your worksheet

Lent Appeal 2015 One evening, you are hanging out with your group of friends when you see another group from a different street. You and your friends hate this group. You see that they are gathered in a circle looking at something. When you move closer, you see that there is a younger boy from their group in the middle of the circle. They are taking it in turns to kick him to the ground. You film what happens on your phone to show other people at school. Scenario 1

Lent Appeal 2015 S1 THINK... The boy had to be taken to hospital and the police are now involved. What could happen to you?

Lent Appeal 2015 You may want to stop the attack but feel too threatened for your own safety or the safety of others. However, by filming what happened and showing it to your friends, you would be protecting the attackers and saying that what they have done is acceptable. By not speaking up and having evidence on your phone, you too could be held responsible by the police. You could be charged with aiding and abetting- aiding and abetting is when you are seen to be helping or encouraging a person to commit a crime. In 2008 a girl was sent to a Youth Offenders Institute after filming an attack on her phone. S.1 Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 There is a celebrity who you find really annoying. You think it would be funny to tweet a rumour you heard about that celebrity which some might find offensive. You are sure your followers will like it though. Scenario 2

Lent Appeal 2015 S2 THINK... What could happen if somebody did not like what you had written on Twitter and reported you?

Lent Appeal 2015 Once a comment is made on a social media site you cannot take it back. You should think about how the person might feel about those comments. Recently there have been court cases over libel (a law which states that you cannot publish a false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation). You should avoid tweeting comments about other people. False comments could lead to police involvement, a court case and that person being sued for damages. S2. Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 Your friend thought it would be funny to Snap a photo of you from the weekend on Snapchat. She took a photo of you when you were getting changed, and the picture shows you in just your underwear. Your parents do not use the app and Snapchat only allows people to view the image for up to 10 seconds so they will not see it. Scenario 3

Lent Appeal 2015 S3. THINK... What could happen if somebody took a screenshot of the photo?

Lent Appeal 2015 The photo could be shared online. If someone copies that image you then have no control over who sees/ shares the photo. Your friend and anybody who shares the photo are breaking the law by producing and distributing child abuse images. Think about how you would feel if your parents/ guardians/ teachers saw those images. Would you be happy? What about a future employer? Would the photos give a good impression of you? S3. Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 It is Saturday and you have gone into town to meet up with a friend. Your friend has not turned up so you decide to check-in online so that they know that you are there. Scenario 4

Lent Appeal 2015 S4. THINK... Who else might be able to see where you are?

Lent Appeal 2015 Checking-in at a location can be dangerous. Do not rely on your privacy settings- strangers may be able to see your account. Someone could potentially follow your updates and see that you are alone. S4. Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 You have had a huge argument with one of your friends at school today. You go home so angry, and you want to tell everybody your side of the story as soon as possible. You update your Facebook status. Scenario 5

Lent Appeal 2015 S5. THINK... What might happen if you write something really offensive about your friend?

Lent Appeal 2015 Although it might feel good to express your anger, you need to carefully think about how your comments could affect other people. How will that person feel about those comments? Could the comments upset them? It might be considered bullying. If that person feels that it is bullying, parents/ guardians/ teachers may become involved. S5. Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 There is a girl at school who everyone makes fun of and no one talks to. Her clothes are really dirty and it looks like she never washes. Over the past couple of months people have been posting comments on her Ask.fm account. So far you have not become involved but so many people are doing it now you feel like you should join in. She must be used to the comments. Scenario 6

Lent Appeal 2015 S6. THINK... You join in. Suddenly she stops coming in to school. You hear that she has committed suicide. How might you feel?

Lent Appeal 2015 Imagine how guilty you would feel if you knew you had made someone feel so bad about themselves that they took their own life. Even if you just comment once, you are contributing to this bullying. There have been recent cases where cyber-bullying has led to violence, depression and suicide. S6. Possible Consequences

Lent Appeal 2015 Sometimes it can be difficult to make the right choices. Every day you face pressures in and out of school, often from your friends. So how can we know what to do? Read Luke The Parable of the Good Samaritan

Lent Appeal 2015 One of the social media scenarios is very similar to the parable of the Good Samaritan. Can you work out which scenario it is?

Lent Appeal 2015 One evening, you are hanging out with your group of friends when you see another group from a different street. You and your friends hate this group. You see that they are gathered in a circle looking at something. When you move closer, you see that there is a younger boy from their group in the middle of the circle. They are taking it in turns to kick him to the ground. You film what happens on your phone to show other people at school. Scenario 1

Lent Appeal 2015 What should you do to avoid this social media problem and become a good social neighbour? Discuss in pairs. Write down your ideas for Scenario 1 on the 'What should you do?' worksheet

Lent Appeal 2015 S1. What should you do to avoid this situation? Just like those who walked past in the parable, you too have a choice. Helping that person, just as the Good Samaritan did, will make you a ‘good neighbour.’ If you feel your own safety or the safety of others is threatened what else could you do? How else could you use that video evidence? Could you film the attackers and not the victim? If you show that evidence to your parents/guardians, teachers, or go directly to the police, they can help the victim and try and prevent attacks like this from happening again.

Lent Appeal 2015 How can we apply Jesus' teachings to our use of social media? ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’ Love your SOCIAL NEIGHBOUR as you love yourself Look again at the other 5 scenarios. What would be the right thing to do in each situation?

Lent Appeal 2015 There is a celebrity who you find really annoying. You think it would be funny to tweet a rumour you heard about that celebrity which some might find offensive. You are sure your followers will like it though. Scenario 2

Lent Appeal 2015 S2. What should you do to avoid this situation? Even if you feel annoyed by somebody, you need to think how you would feel if someone made nasty comments about you. You should avoid sending tweets that could hurt anyone’s feelings.

What should you do to avoid this situation? Politely ask your friend not to upload photos of you on the internet without your permission. Maybe talk about the possible consequences of uploading inappropriate photos with your friend. Remember to always check your privacy settings.

Lent Appeal 2015 It is Saturday and you have gone into town to meet up with a friend. Your friend has not turned up so you decide to check-in online so that they know that you are there. Scenario 4

Lent Appeal 2015 S4. What should you do to avoid this situation? Avoid checking-in online. Your safety is the most important thing. Call, text or private message a friend if you are unsure where they are.

Lent Appeal 2015 You have had a huge argument with one of your friends at school today. You go home so angry, and you want to tell everybody your side of the story as soon as possible. You update your Facebook status. Scenario 5

Lent Appeal 2015 S5. What should you do to avoid this situation? Spend some time reflecting on what has happened and why you are so angry. Talk through the problem with someone at home or another friend rather than posting something that you might regret online.

What should you do to avoid this situation? Do something kind for that person- they probably feel alone and helpless. Even something small like a short conversation or walking home from school together could make a big difference.

Lent Appeal 2015 Think about all of the situations and problems you have looked at. Write down 3 rules which you think everybody should follow to be a good social neighbour.

Lent Appeal 2015 Alongside your investigation into how to be a good social neighbour, we are asking you to think about your actual neighbours. Who is your neighbour?

Lent Appeal 2015 Your neighbours are the 700,000 children in the Westminster Diocese currently living in poverty. We are asking you to think about these children during the Lenten period by raising money for our Crisis Fund

Lent Appeal 2015 What is the Crisis Fund? The Crisis Fund is a fund which provides emergency assistance for families experiencing severe disadvantage. This may mean buying food, clothes, or furniture for families who have nothing. 100% of the money donated to the Crisis Fund goes directly to supporting those families in need. This means that all of the money that you collect will go straight to those children who need it most.

Lent Appeal 2015 We want your help in raising money for these families during Lent. You will each be given a coin tube to help with your fund raising. Each coin tube can hold 25x £1 coins, so try and see how many coins you can collect! THANK YOU!
