AADDC: Science and Social Studies | March 7, 2014 Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability Division of Performance Reporting Overview of Academic Achievement Distinction Designations

2 Accountability Rating Labels Accountability Rating (Campuses and Districts) Met Standard Met Alternative Standard* (assigned to charter operators and alternative education campuses (AECs) evaluated under alternative education accountability (AEA) provisions) Improvement Required Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting *AECs evaluated under AEA provisions are not eligible for distinction designations, per Texas Education Code (TEC) §

3 Distinction Designations 2013  Academic Achievement in:  Reading/English Language Arts (ELA)  Mathematics  Index 2: Student Progress – Top 25% 2014  Academic Achievement in:  Reading/ELA  Mathematics  Science  Social Studies  Index 2: Student Progress – Top 25%  Index 3: Closing Performance Gaps  Index 4: Postsecondary Readiness for campuses and districts Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting Shaded areas are new for 2014 Campuses that receive an accountability rating of Met Standard are eligible for the following distinction designations.

4 Academic Achievement Distinction Designation Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting 2013 Academic Achievement - Reading/ELA and mathematics  Campuses with grades 3-12 enrollment that achieve a Met Standard rating are eligible to receive academic achievement distinction designation (AADD).  Campuses are evaluated solely on the “All Students” student group.  Elementary and middle schools in the top quartile on at least 50 percent of the above indicators receive a distinction designation for that subject area.  High schools in the top quartile on at least 33 percent of the above indicators receive a distinction designation for that subject area.

5 Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting AADD Indicator High School Middle School Junior High ElementaryK-8K-12 Attendance rate Not Subject Specific / Applies to both subjects and all levels Greater Than Expected Student Growth ELA & Math Grade 3 Reading Performance (Level III) R/ELA Grade 4 Writing Performance (Level III) R/ELA Grade 5 Math Performance (Level III) Math Grade 7 Writing Performance (Level III) R/ELA Grade 8 Reading Performance (Level III) R/ELA Algebra I by Grade 8-Participation Math Algebra I by Grade 8–Performance (Level III) Math AP/IB and Advanced/Dual Enrollment Course Completion Participation ELA & Math AP/IB Examination Performance: ELA R/ELA AP/IB Examination Performance: Math Math SAT/ACT Participation ELA & Math SAT Performance: ELA R/ELA SAT Performance: Math Math ACT Performance: ELA R/ELA ACT Performance: Math Math Total Indicators Reading/ELA Mathematics AADD Indicators by Campus Type and Subject R/ELA = indicator can be evaluated for Reading/English Language Arts only Math = indicator can be evaluated for Mathematics only ELA & Math= indicator will be evaluated for both Reading/ELA and Mathematics Not Subject Specific = indicator cannot be directly associated with either Reading/ELA or Mathematics Blank = indicator is not applicable at this campus level.

Mathematics Example 6 Methodology for AADD Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting Step 1 Determine Campus Comparison Group Calculate campus performance on each distinction indicator for subject Algebra I by end of Grade 8 Mathematics ACT Performance Mathematics AP/IB Performance … Up to 11 indicators (depending on campus grade configuration) Campus Profile Report  Step 2 Compare performance on each indicator to campuses in Comparison Groups Top Quartile among comparison group …  Step 3 Generate a single outcome for campus by subject Campus Outcome for Subject: Percent of Measures in the Top Quartile (2 out of 4 = 50%, 3 out of 5 = 60%, or 3 out of 8= 38%)  Step 4 Identify campuses that qualify to earn Distinction Designations Statewide Evaluation of Campus Outcomes: Eligible Distinctions based on the Percent of Measures in the Top Quartile Elementary and Middle Schools: 50% or higher High Schools and K-12 campuses: 33% or higher Distinction Designation

7 Mathematics Example: Pflugerville HS 1.Identify a campus comparison group for Pflugerville High School based on: a. Campus type (elementary, middle, high school); b. Campus size (total student enrollment); c. Percent of economically disadvantaged students enrolled for ; d. Percent of limited English proficient students enrolled for ; and e.Percent of mobile students, as determined from cumulative attendance. 9 Mathematics Example: Pflugerville HS Methodology for AADD – Step 2 Texas Education Agency | Office of Assessment and Accountability | Division of Performance Reporting Step 1 Calculate campus performance on each distinction indicator for subject Compare performance on each indicator to campuses in Comparison Group Indicator Pflugerville HS Score Quartile  Attendance Rate Greater Than Expected Progress: Mathematics Grade 5 Mathematics Performance (Level III) Algebra I by Grade 8 - Participation Algebra I by Grade 8 - Performance (Level III) AP/IB and Advanced/Dual Enrollment Course Completion Participation AP/IB Examination Performance: Mathematics SAT/ACT Participation SAT Performance: Mathematics ACT Performance: Mathematics 96.1% 2% 27% 59% 74% Q1 Q3 Q1 Q2 Campus Profile Report Step 2 Blank values for an Indicator Score occur if the indicator is not applicable to that campus or does not meet minimum size of 10 students. Blank values for a Quartile occur if there are less than 20 campuses in the campus comparison group for each qualifying indicator. The Attendance Rate Indicator is not subject specific; therefore, it applies to both Reading/ELA and Mathematics. Consequently, this indicator cannot be the sole measure used by a campus to attain a distinction.
