Year 2 SATs Information Evening Tuesday 20 th January 2015 Miss H Drinkwater Miss L Gee

What does SATs stand for? Statutory Assessment Tests Statutory Assessment Tasks

What is teacher assessment? Teachers constantly gather evidence about pupil performance. The SAT’s are part of the teacher assessment process.

What subjects do the children take SATs in? Teacher assessment for 7 year olds covers reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and science. SATs are taken in reading, writing and maths.

Do all children take SATs tests? The children either take a test or a task depending on the level that they are working at.

Reading Working towards level 1: A short task with the teacher 1 to 1 setting How well do they read words and comprehend them?

Reading Working at or above level 1: A more formal reading test Both fiction and non-fiction texts A mixture of multiple choice and short written questions. How well do they read words and comprehend them?

Writing There are two writing tests: Short writing test Long writing test This work will also be used to assess handwriting.

Spelling This is a short dictation passage with 20 missing words which the children have to spell.

Maths Working at level 1: Practical maths tasks Working at levels 2 and 3: Test booklets Completed in as much time as the child needs. Application of knowledge to a wide range of contexts.

Mental Maths 5 questions Range of skills and knowledge Read out by the teacher and children answer in the booklet

Why do the children take SATs tests? These tests are used as a tool to assess your child’s attainment before they go into Key Stage Two. They also allow us to assess the progress that they have made during Key Stage One.

When will my child take their Key Stage One tests? During the summer term of Year 2. We are planning to do the tests during the week beginning Tuesday 5 th May (Mon is bank hol, Thu is INSET). Where possible, please avoid taking your child out of school during this time.

Will my child get any help with their tests? While it is anticipated that the tests will be done independently, some children may require an adult to read the questions (not in the reading) or an adult to scribe written answers (not in the writing test).

Who marks the SATs tests? We mark the SATs tests within school and use the results as another form of assessment for the children. How will I find out my child’s results? Your child’s teacher assessments will be given in the annual report in July.

What can I do to help my child? Continue to hear your child read any sort of book regularly and ask them questions to check their understanding of it. Encourage any type of writing: lists, stories, fact books etc and encourage spelling (HFW), use of punctuation and vocabulary. Mental arithmetic in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as simple word problems that involve these operations. Ask the child how they derived the answer.

We take a relaxed approach to the SATs, calling it ‘special work’ so that the children are not put under any unnecessary pressure. We encourage all children to focus and try their best and we praise and reward such behaviour. This makes SATs an enjoyable experience for the children who view it as a new and novel approach to their work. If you have any queries then please feel free to come and talk to us.
