Research in the medical curriculum David Taylor

In Liverpool today  Everyone has a total period of 9 months during their 5 year programme which is set aside for research. In year 14 weeks, 3000 word structured review In year 22x4 weeks, 2x3000 word dissertations In year 3 1x 4week “critical thinking module” 1x25day, 3000 word dissertation In year 52x8week “Selectives in advanced medical practice”

 One structured review chosen from a catalogue (Y1)  Three other dissertations either self selected or chosen from a catalogue (Y2,Y2,Y3)  More than one from: Structured review, lab science, data interpretation, audit, case based Dissertations – all supervised

 3 rd year  2000 words.  Write a grant proposal for a clinical study, to include rationale, literature review, protocol and sample size calculation  This is then peer reviewed, and the student has to respond to the peer review (1000 words) and submit everything as a portfolio. Critical Thinking Module

 Our final year is an internship with 5x8 week rotations.  For two of them students can choose their own topics  2x3000 word reports either audit or case reports. Selectives in Advanced Medical Practice

 Around 20% of our students intercalate a Masters Degree between year 4 and year 5.  About 30% of our students present something at national/international conferences.  Around 10% of them publish full papers in peer review journals. In addition
