Welcome to Year One

Arrival in the morning Please ensure that you and your child arrive promptly in the morning. Children will be marked late after If you have something urgent to share with your class teacher please see them in the morning, otherwise please make an appointment after school, when we are always happy to make time to talk through any issues. Going home Please let us know in writing if there are any permanent picking up arrangements, even if these are the same as in Foundation Stage. Each class has a ‘Going Home’ board by their entrance door. Please write on the board if someone different is picking up. Please phone the office if you need to make alternative arrangements during the day.

Children should bring in their book bags in everyday. Encourage your children to change their books as soon as they have finished with a text. Check your child’s bag for letters daily even if you are registered with parent mail. Book Bags Please do not put water bottles in book bags!!!

P.E. Earrings We cannot take a child's earrings out or put them back in. So either: ·take them out on PE days ·teach your child to remove them themselves (this is ideal as P. E. days have been known to change at the last minute) ·provide micro pore tape to cover their ears Long hair MUST be tied back. PE kit should consist of black shorts, white T shirt, trainers or plimsolls and a tracksuit for outdoors. Children who do not have a P.E. kit will have to wear spare school kit.

School Uniform Please label all items including P.E. kit. Label everything! Show the children where their clothes are labelled so that they may look for them if they are lost. Please make sure that the children wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather. Check the weather forecast!!! The lost property is now in the cooking area.

Medicines and illness We must have all epipens and other medication in school. Medication is kept in the first aid room, and therefore should be in a named and sealed box, with protocol. All staff are trained every year to use epipens in an emergency. Staff are not allowed to give medications such as antibiotics, parents must come into school to medicate their child. Please ensure all medication is in date. Please phone or the school office as soon as you can if your child is ill. If your child has vomited you should allow 48 hours before your child comes into school again.

Learning We are learning about the following topics this year: · Ourselves, the local area and changes as we grow (Autumn Term) · Amazing Inventions/Superheroes (Spring Term) · The Sea and the Coast (Summer Term)

Reading Reading in class is taught through ·weekly guided reading sessions ·daily phonic sessions ·independent reading activities · whole class reading on the Smartboard or with big books We will try to hear your child read individually as often as possible. This allows us to assess your child's decoding and comprehension skills and change book bands as appropriate. Please only take a book that is on the colour/number assigned by the teacher. Please encourage your child to change their book whenever they need to. Children will also have the opportunity to borrow books from the library.

Phonics Phonics is taught every day, in class groups. Phonics is interactive, fun and engaging for children at all levels. We shall revise Phase 3 phonemes initially, before moving onto Phase 5 of Letters & Sounds, continuing the programme started in Foundation Stage. Phase 5 introduces new tricky words and different ways of making the same sound. Children will be supported in their phonics by displays and other resources. To find out more, Google: Letters and Sounds Department of Education

Home-School Book Every week your child will receive a small Challenge that is usually relevant to something that has happened in school or something to enhance future learning. This is not 'Homework' and is not compulsory. If you or your child find it stressful - DO NOT DO IT!

Outdoor Classroom Each class will have the opportunity to use the outdoor learning area, on a rotational basis. This is an exciting chance to explore learning and develop investigation skills in the outdoor environment.

Encouraging self esteem and rewards systems Each class utilises many ways to encourage good behaviour and work. The main ways are The Schools Golden rules The Class Charter The Sunny, Cloudy and Stormy area Sticker charts Teachers may use other methods that they want in addition to the above.

Helping in class and on trips Does anybody have any useful skills? ·costume making? - we would like lots of costumes for role play! ·cooking? ·gardening? ·IT? Helping in school does have to be a regular slot - see the class teacher to arrange days. However you may be able to help by doing things at home.

Our aim to keep the school website as up to date as possible. Please check the Year One page for topic and challenge information.

Things we need! Garage & toy cars Farm set & animals Play tents Train sets Comics Dressing up clothes Construction apparatus Thank You!
