THE ANNUAL COST OF PET OWNERSHIP By: Sam Bierman Friday, October 31, 2014 Project number #1

Project Choice: Reasons why I chose this project: To learn the approximate yearly cost to care for a Labrador Retriever dog (Lab). My family owns a Chocolate Lab named Kona. Math + Kona = FUN!

Kona’s Annual Supplies: (Age 5 to 6) Food (x1 30 pound bag a month) Collar (x2 a year) “Gentle Leader” (x1) Shampoo (x2 bottles) Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Guard (x4) Leash (x1) Treats (x12 boxes) Ear Cleaning (x4) Ear Cytology (x1) Physical Exam (x1) Screening (x1) Vetro Max (x1) Grooming (x2)

Annual Cost: SuppliesCost for OneAnnual Cost Food (x12)$49.99$ Collar (x2)$9.47$18.94 Gentle Leader (x1)$26.99 Shampoo (x2)$8.99$17.98 Flea, Tick and Heartworm Guard (x4) $12.99$51.96 Leash (x1)$39.99 Treats (x12)$4.79$57.48 Ear Care (Cytology and Cleaning) (x1 and x4) Cleaning: $10.00 Cytology: Cleaning: $40.00 Cytology: Physical Exam (x1)$46.50 Screening (x1)$30.50 Vetro Max (x1)$21.50 Grooming (x2)$35.00$70.00 Total-$1,119.19

Explanation: 1. Read veterinarian’s report for Kona’s visit. 2. Interviewed my Mom about Kona’s care. 3. Listed supplies needed for Kona. 4. Looked at PetSmart.com for cost of items. 5. Multiplied each item by correct number to find yearly cost. 6. Formed cost table. 7. My sister Elle helped make the pie chart.

What I Learned: 1. Taking care of a dog is pricey! 2. Each individual supply item is multiplied by the number of times a year it is bought. 3. Food is the most expensive part of caring for Kona that year. 4. Kona’s supply list is long. 5. I’m lucky to have a dog! 6. We try to take good care of Kona.
