Interpret The Graph. The graph shows an object which is not moving (at rest). The distance stays the same as time goes by because it is not moving.

Acceleration Acceleration Velocity-time graph Questions

Acceleration Acceleration tells you how quick the velocity of an object is changing, we calculate it using the formula, 𝐴= 𝑉−𝑈 𝑇 A – acceleration ( 𝑚/𝑠 2 ) V-final velocity(m/s) U-initial velocity (m/s) T- time taken for change (s)

Acceleration 𝐴= 𝑉−𝑈 𝑇 Means: acceleration= 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

Acceleration When an object speeds up it is accelerating When an object slows down it is decelerating When an object has a constant velocity it is not accelerating

Velocity-time graph 40 30 20 10 Velocity(m/s) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Time(s) This graph shows us that the car accelerated for 0-40m/s in 10 seconds It also shows us that the car then stayed at velocity of 40m/s for 20 seconds before slowing from 40-0m/s in 20 seconds

Velocity-time graph C B D A 40 30 20 10 C B Velocity(m/s) D A 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Time(s) We can calculate the acceleration using the gradient of the graph. The acceleration between point A and B is: 𝐴= 𝑉−𝑈 𝑇 𝐴= 40−0 10 𝐴=4 𝑚/𝑠 2

Velocity-time graph C B D A 40 30 20 10 C B Velocity(m/s) D A 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 We can calculate the distance an object has moved by finding the area under the graph, for example, Between point A and B the area under the graph: 40×10 2 = 200m

Question time What is the formula for acceleration? C B 2) How far did the object move between point B and C? 3) What was the deceleration between point C and D? 40 30 20 10 C B Velocity(m/s) D A 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Time(s)
