DAVID THE SHEPHERD KING #6 When Our Security Is Gone – Part 2 1 Samuel 18:6-21:16

Where do we find our security? In our jobs, our home, our health, or in our family? –Some act as though they do not even need God for security – thinking they are all they need –Sometimes is takes calamity in our lives before we see the need to trust in God as our security In our last lesson we noted how that David was riding high on the clouds of secure circumstances. –But suddenly things began to change – he began to loose his securities one at a time –The first thing that David lost was his good position – as we discussed last week

THE SECOND THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS WIFE MICHAL –You will remember that David had to escape during the night to save his life – and Michal now is going to take steps to cover her tracts –1 Samuel 19:13-17 Now, was what Michal said here true? Did David threaten to kill her if she didn’t help him escape? No! She was telling this lie so that she will have a bridge back to the palace! Michal proved here and later, to be the kind of person who is loyal to the one who is moving up. She dropped David like a hot potato! As a matter of fact, David would be on the run for quite awhile after this. What did Michal do during that time? Let me show you… 1 Samuel 25:44 –Saul gave David’s wife to someone else! –And is there any hint that she resisted? Not the slightest bit! 1 Sam 19:13-17 Michal took the household idol and laid it on the bed, and put a quilt of goats' hair at its head, and covered it with clothes. 14 When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, " He is sick." 15 Then Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me on his bed, that I may put him to death." 16 When the messengers entered, behold, the household idol was on the bed with the quilt of goats' hair at its head. 17 So Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?" And Michal said to Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go! Why should I put you to death?'" 1 Sam 25:44 Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.

THE SECOND THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS WIFE MICHAL –You will remember that David had to escape during the night to save his life – and Michal now going to take steps to cover her tracts –1 Samuel 19:13-17 –I cannot tell you what I would do if my wife left me or was suddenly taken from me. But I can tell you that it would be very difficult for me. Perhaps some of you know what it feels like. You may know first hand what it means to lose someone you’ve depended on. Some of you have, during a time of loss like that, learned in a special way what it means to lean upon the Lord and get your security from Him But there are some who are completely wiped out by such a loss. –Well, through no fault of his own, David has lost his position and now his wife.

THE THIRD THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS OLD MENTOR –When we are hurting from a loss, we usually go to those whom we care about and have helped us in the past –1 Samuel 19:18a Can you imagine what that conversation must have been like? “Samuel, I was doing my job – I’ve done nothing wrong … Why is all this happening to me?” Do you know anyone who have ever used these words before? Have you? –Why does God allow these things to happen to His faithful children? –Doesn’t God care? Yes, he does! 1 Sam 19:18 Now David fled and escaped and came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him

THE THIRD THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS OLD MENTOR –When we are hurting from a loss, we usually go to those whom we care about and have helped us in the past –1 Samuel 19:18a –1 Samuel 19:18b Naioth was the place where Samuel kept his “school of the prophets,” where young men trained for the prophetic ministry Certainly Saul wouldn’t find him there, or perhaps wouldn’t pursue him there, since he might fear what God might do to him through Samuel. But David had no sooner gotten there than word got out. 1 Sam 19:18 And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth

THE THIRD THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS OLD MENTOR –When we are hurting from a loss, we usually go to those whom we care about and have helped us in the past –1 Samuel 19:18a –1 Samuel 19:18b –1 Samuel 19:19-20 God protected David there for a while. As Saul sent his men to capture David, they would get close to the place and suddenly God’s spirit would come upon them and they would prophesy. They would return empty handed. This went on several times until finally Saul himself went to get David, but with the same results. 1 Sam 19:19-20 It was told Saul, saying, "Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah." 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and they also prophesied.

THE THIRD THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS OLD MENTOR –When we are hurting from a loss, we usually go to those whom we care about and have helped us in the past –1 Samuel 19:18a –1 Samuel 19:18b –1 Samuel 19:19-20 –But finally, David had to leave his good friend Samuel. I picture Samuel saying something like, “David, you have to go – we cannot protect you anymore.” 1 Sam 20:1 –So, in 1 Samuel 20 we see David fleeing to the side of another friend – Jonathan 1 Sam 20:1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah

THE FOURTH THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS BEST FRIEND –Picture David, out of breath, having just come in from Ramah, talking with his old friend Just like us today when suddenly things seem to be going all bad and we have done nothing to deserve it – David was wondering why? 1 Samuel 20:1 1 Sam 20:1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said to Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he is seeking my life?"

THE FOURTH THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS BEST FRIEND –Picture David, out of breath, having just come in from Ramah, talking with his old friend –At first Jonathan did not believe that his father could have reverted back to wanting David dead. But in the series of events that followed, he was convinced and saw no other recourse than that he and his friend should part company 1 Samuel 20:41-42 –David was weeping no doubt because he had to part company with his close friend –David would see his friend only one more time before Jonathan’s untimely death –David was to lose one more thing 1 Sam 20:41-42 When the lad was gone, David rose from the south side and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed three times. And they kissed each other and wept together, but David wept the more. 42 Jonathan said to David, " Go in safety, inasmuch as we have sworn to each other in the name of the LORD, saying, ' The LORD will be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants forever.'" Then he rose and departed, while Jonathan went into the city

THE FIFTH THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS PERSONAL DIGNITY –In chapter 21, David goes into the city of the priests, called Nob. There he took nourishment and was given the sword he had taken from Goliath Nob would later be destroyed for helping David (1 Sam. 22:17-19) 1 Sam 22:17-19 And the king said to the guards who were attending him, "Turn around and put the priests of the LORD to death, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not reveal it to me." But the servants of the king were not willing to put forth their hands to attack the priests of the LORD. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn around and attack the priests." And Doeg the Edomite turned around and attacked the priests, and he killed that day eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. 19 And he struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; also oxen, donkeys, and sheep he struck with the edge of the sword.

THE FIFTH THING DAVID LOST WAS HIS PERSONAL DIGNITY –In chapter 21, David goes into the city of the priests, called Nob. –1 Samuel 21:10-15 David fled to “Gath” - the city of Goliath, David was trying to hide here. Can you imagine David trying to hide there – why he would be a household name. They knew who David was and he became very afraid – so he acts like a crazy man. They brought David to the King, and the king says I have enough nuts around me as it is – why are you bringing me another? So David is forced to abandon even his personal dignity as he disguises his sanity and drools in his beard and scratches on the gate. 1 Sam 21:10-15 Then David arose and fled that day from Saul, and went to Achish king of Gath. 11 But the servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of this one as they danced, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands'?" 12 David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish king of Gath. 13 So he disguised his sanity before them, and acted insanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva run down into his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, "Behold, you see the man behaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me? 15 "Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this one to act the madman in my presence? Shall this one come into my house?"

So what about all of this? What does it mean to us? How does it apply? –Some of you may already know what it is like to loose the things in which we find security – our homes, job, family, etc. … we may be wondering why??? –You see, what has happened is that we have allowed the things of this world to be those things that bring us security – we have allowed “things” to replace God in our lives. –David was passing through some of the darkest moments of his life – yet, he put his trust in God What would be your response if you were to suddenly lose it all? What would God want your response to be?
