Presentation transcript:

From Victory to Defeat (ch. 7) The PEOPLE of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan took some of the DEVOTED things And the ANGER of the LORD burned against the people of Israel To “break faith” is a conscious act of treachery or unfaithfulness against the LORD in direct violation of His covenant with Israel.

Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai to spy on the land (v. 2)

Israel Attacks Ai

From Victory to Defeat 3000 mean were assembled to bring destruction to Ai. (7.4) When they arrived they were overwhelmed and fled before the men of Ai. The men of Ai killed about 36 of their men an chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim. The hearts of Israel MELTED and became like water

The Army of Ai

Israel in Retreat

Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. (7.6)

Joshua Complains to the LORD Why did you bring us here just to give us into the hands of our enemies (7.7) We could have been very happy over on the other side of the Jordan (7.8) Israel is now afraid of their enemies (7.8) The Canaanites and everyone else will hear of this defeat and will surround us and destroy us. (7.9)

The Sin of Achan The LORD tells Joshua get up! Israel has SINNED and they have TRANSGRESSED. Sin = miss the mark Transgression = cross over a boundary What’s the problem? They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. I will not fight for you until these things are destroyed!

The Consecration of Israel

The Casting of Lots (7.14 – 18) Here we discover the four categories of Israelite social structure… Tribe = Achan is from the tribe of Judah Clan/Family = Achan is from the clan of Zerah Household = nuclear family, Achan is from the household of Zabdi, son of Zerah Individuals = man by man The Lord will show who has betrayed Israel and the covenant of the LORD.

Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me what you have done…so Achan said, “Truly I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I did…” (7.19 – 21)

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with silver underneath. And they took them to Joshua and all the people of Israel (7:22 – 23)

Achan’s Punishment Achan was STONED to death. The preferred method of capital punishment Achan and the devoted things where then burned up. Then a great heap of stones was placed over the remains to this day. The name of the place is called the Valley of Achor. (Valley of trouble)

The Great Stone Heap

The Fall of Ai (chapter 8) Go back to Ai for I have given the city to you (8.1) You shall destroy the city but keep its spoil and its livestock. (8.2) Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men to go out at night and lay ready for ambush. Joshua and the rest of the forces will attack the city and draw about the armies for you so that you can go in and capture the city. (8.4-8)

10 Joshua arose early in the morning and mustered the people and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the fighting men who were with him went up and drew near before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai, with a ravine between them and Ai. 12 He took about 5,000 men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So they stationed the forces, the main encampment that was north of the city and its rear guard west of the city. But Joshua spent that night in the valley. 14 And as soon as the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried and went out early to the appointed place toward the Arabah to meet Israel in battle. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the men in the ambush rose quickly out of their place, and as soon as he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it. And they hurried to set the city on fire.

And Israel struck them down, until there was left none that survived or escaped. 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him near to Joshua.
