BY SEAN ANTHONY The Normans

Who were the Normans? The Normans were originally Vikings from Scandinavia At the beginning of the tenth century the French King, Charles the Simple, gave them some land in the North of France hoping that they would stop attacking France The land was first known as Northmannia, the land of the Northmen, but this was later shortened to Normandy By the year 1000, they were no longer Viking pagans but French speaking Christians.

What did the Normans do? In 1066 the Normans invaded England and the Battle of Hastings began The Normans won the Battle of Hastings for key three reasons 1. King Harold wasn’t ready when the Normans attacked because he was fighting the King of Norway and his Vikings in York 2. William of Normandy was well prepared before the battle and gained the advantage 3. King Harold was killed and his soldiers fled the battlefield

The Battle of Hasting Timeline DateAction Sept 13, 1066 William demands that King Harold passes his crown to William, Harold refuses so they prepare for battle Sept 14, 1066 William Raised the Norman’s Flag and ordered the his army to battle A fence and a ditch were built as part of the Saxon defences Harold’s men were entitled to strike first The two armies exchanged blows and many Normans died in the ditch The Battle raged for hours so the Normans changed their tactics. They shot their arrows upward in the air striking the faces of the English soldiers An arrow struck Harold above his right eye. He lost his eye and was killed Many English soldiers fled. William had won the Battle of Hastings - he was the Conqueror! Sept 15, 1066 The Normans and the Saxons buried their dead and William the Conqueror prepared to conquer England
