Sojourner Truth’s owner, John J. Dumont, promised to let her free, but when he backed out on his vow, she fled, fortunate that she found Isaac and Maria Van Wagener, who bought her freedom.

Also names Isabella Van Wagener by the people who bought her freedom.

 Born in 1797 in Ulster County, NY  Lived In damp cellar  First language- Low Dutch  Sold to John J. Dumont in New Paltz, NY

Sojourner Truth found out that her son had been sold out of the state (which is illegal) and she pressed court proceedings and won her son back.

 Good at singing  A speaker  Won a trial against white man  Had a vision in which she saw love in the form of Jesus  In June 1843, she took the name of Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth is still remembered today.

 Sojourner Truth had seen most of her children sold off to slavery, crying a mothers grief.

Sojourner Truth was a leader in the Women's Rights Movement and gave a very important speech that changed the minds of everyone who heard.
