Quick Start Training Cell Phone Market Migration

Quick Start Training 3G Application Categories Conversational – Primary mission, must do this well – Negligible dropout and noise;might want “call waiting” Streaming – Audio - how much packet variation can be tolerated? – Video - how much packet variation can be tolerated? Interactive – Need to view/hear and interact with the stream – Net surfing; gaming Background

Quick Start Training Battery Requirements Battery Capacity in Hours

Quick Start Training Power Requirements Customers expect longer standby / talk times – Was 24, went to 48 hours, now at least a week! Customers want faster recharge times – Was 8, went to 2 hours, now want even less! Handset builders must compete! – Can’t afford to add in anything that draws power CoolRunner-II Features make the difference!

Quick Start Training Competitive Differentiation If you just use the vendor chipsets, your add on options are restricted to those planned by them Your phone will be just like your competition’s So goes your pricing and hence your profit The key to success in the cell phone market is product differentiation CoolRunner-II lets you break away from the crowd

Quick Start Training Where CoolRunner-II Fits Interfacing – RAM – EPROM – ASSPs Cameras, GPS, MP3, ASSPs Power management Security – See “Cell Phone Theft” and “CoolRunner-II Security” for more detail

Quick Start Training Interfacing Vendor Chip Set Camera 1 Camera 2 Camera 3 Camera 4 Mobile DRAM Cellular RAM SRAM QDR SRAM CPLD

Quick Start Training Pin Expansion Big Ugly ASIC Large pin out equals $$$ Cheap ASIC Same net pins saves $$$

Quick Start Training The Future 4G is supposed to be Software Defined Radio – Strange title, in that 3G already has multiple processors, and current 4G proposals resemble vector processors! ( should be Processor Defined Radio ) – Bandwidth will be a challenge Imagine streaming video, with Turbo FEC, compression and encryption all pipelined – Battery life will also be a challenge with that bandwidth – Pricing will then be the ultimate challenge

Quick Start Training The Future Continues Software Defined Radio may be the ultimate in algorithmic flexibility, but will be unable to change its hardware configuration...without a little help. The problem with the future is its unknown CoolRunner-II CPLDs adapt to future I/O ports, memory types and ASSPs and still not deplete batteries!
