1 ICT R&D&Innovation in Europe A market of more than 660 Billion Euro –Largest market world wide, (~34%) EU produces 23% of the world ICT value added –ICT, one of the largest export sectors of the EU (10%) –ICT a large part of our imports (14,5 %) More than 30% of research workforce is in ICT DAE: EU Member States' total annual public spending on ICT R&D should double to €11bn by 2020.

2 Why Cooperate Internationally on ICT ICT accounts for ~30% of total R&D effort worldwide Growing need for international cooperation to address complex scientific challenges and share high-cost projects or research infrastructures ASEAN and EU have similar S&T policies; we need to tackle jointly such global issues as climate change and need to work together on sustainable development
