2 ND 9WKS – WK5 – D1 UNIT: Theme/Style Analysis

AGENDA  Look over notes for EOC bell work quiz  EOC Bell work quiz  Discuss chs. 7-8  Introduce the Socratic seminar  Video Example  Assign topics & partners for seminar

5 MINS. STUDY TIME  Time to look at study guide, to check any previous bell work notes, & to ask questions regarding the quiz

BELL WORK QUIZ  Clear desks of everything aside from paper or pencil. Turn into tray when finished.

CHS. 7-8  Pearl may be taken away? Under what circumstances should a child be taken away from her mother in OUR society? Should Hester lose Pearl?  Hester can keep the child because she will teach her a lesson about shame and mistakes. Is “to teach” a mandatory item on a parent’s job description? In what ways does Hester’s society have “mistakes?”

CHS. 7-8  What local authority figure has Pearl taken to, and who comes to Hester and Pearl’s aid when it is questioned why Hester should keep Pearl (same person)?  Who still wants the authorities to find out Hester’s lover? What is their response?  What does this man gain from exposing her lover? What all does this lover have to lose?

CHS. 7-8  Aside from the letter, what else is a constant reminder of Hester’s sin? Hester and this reminder’s identities are largely composed of society’s labels, but should we allow the same for ourselves?  How is the governor’s mansion the opposite of a core Puritan belief about material things (think of how everything looked in The Crucible film)?

WHAT IS A SOCRATIC SEMINAR?  Let’s watch the video and discuss what it looks like to you.

SOCRATIC SEMINAR  You prepare notes of discussion, quotes from the book, & links to the outside world ahead of time; you then bring this to discussion to add to your group’s discussion.

TIME PARAMETERS  A-Groups: 20 minutes of discussion while B partners evaluate speakers  B-Groups: Same, but flip

QUESTIONS  A)What does sin/guilt do to a person? Can we/should we be forgiven the sins of our past?  B)Is it natural to condemn other humans for their flaws? What are the effects of this? (A = odd#, B = even#)

GROUPS    

EXIT TICKET – 3 MINUTES  In roughly 2-3 sentences, write your initial beliefs on your topic. You may use the back of your prep. sheet; you will not turn the ticket in, but I will call on random people to read their sentences in 3 minutes.  HOMEWORK: Read chs by Wednesday & *all prep. for Thursday’s Socratic seminar will be done outside of class time.
