IPv6 and IBP storage network and content delivery system over an IPv6 Testbed Gabriella Paolini

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR 6net 6NET is a three-year IST European project to demonstrate that continued growth of the Internet can be met using new IPv6 technology. to help European research and industry play a leading role in defining and developing the next generation of networking technologies. A native IPv6-based network with both static and mobile components in order to gain experience of IPv6 deployment and migration from existing IPv4-based networks.

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR GARR in 6NET A complex participation: GARR coordinates 12 local partners We are participating in many activities within the project Users connected in native mode using dedicated ATM pvc, sometimes dual-stack in users side.

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR Dual Stack Pilot: Going towards an IPv4/IPv6 production network We are upgrading our network to IPv6 We are involved in the GEANT IPv6 Task Force, following the GEANT roadmap Our Pilot plan is in 3 stages: 1 st stage: the Network 2 nd stage: the Routing 3 rd stage: the Users

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR What we needed Increasing traffic volume Nearly-production traffic (not originated by traffic generators) Involving users No users continuous presence (ex.:Online games, videoconference need that)

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR Looking for a 'killer application' Network Storage environment should be it We have started a collaboration with the University of Tennessee (Logistical Networking Project) We are building an Ipv6 Logistical infrastructure on our current 6net topology.

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR Internet Backplane Protocol middleware It's Ipv6-ready A storage network infrastructure Total control of data movement and staging Ready for Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD I2-DSI an Internet2 initiative based on IBP

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR What we can do Generating IPv6 traffic, without users' continuous presence. Building an IPv6 platform for content delivering: Open source, GNU, free software distributed with a web page interface (ex.:linux distributions...) Possibility of involving IPv4 users with an underlying IPv6 infrastructure. (with a dual-stack web server) An easy service with coherency and replica consistency.

10 April 2003 – Internet2 Meeting Gabriella Paolini – GARR GARR implementation 3 depots on the backbone Other depots located in the users premises 1 st step: testing the system and building the storage network (now) 2 nd step: a software distribution system using a web interface (ready in May) and the P-2-P client tools.
