Introduction Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology  In recent years due to acute power crisis, the utilization of biomass for energy production is growing.  Biomass has the potential to become one of the major global and regional primary energy sources in the coming years.  Modernized bio-energy systems are suggested to be vital contributors to future sustainable energy systems and to the sustainable development in industrialized countries as well as in developing countries.

About the study area  Tamil Nadu being an agricultural state is basically a leader in agricultural productions in India.  More than 70% of the population are engaged in agriculture and is known to have a good agricultural biomass potential. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology

Need of Study  As per the recent statistics …Tamil Nadu, the electricity demands are more than the supply and hence there is an urgent need for alternate energy source.  Moreover, new and renewable energy sources including wind power, biomass and solar power would play an important part as to provide the deficit power and meet the growing needs.  The renewable energy technologies contribute to economic, social and security benefits at the national and local levels and also offers the prospect of increasing energy supplies in a sustainable way. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology

Data collection and preliminary calculations  District wise crops grown and area details were collected from the Tamil Nadu State Agriculture Department.  Calculate the district wise electricity consumption, the details on per capita electricity consumption was collected from Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).  The ultimate and proximate analysis done for the energy calculation of rice husk and sugarcane bagasse was taken from the study carried in Tamil Nadu. ParametersRice huskSugarcane Bagasse Moisture Ash C H O N S Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology

Calculation of energy production  The thermo chemical model which is designed for the Gasifier working under optimized condition was used to calculate the energy potential from rice husk and sugarcane bagasse.  This data was further used in calculating the district wise energy potential of Tamil Nadu.  The conversion factor used in the study to convert rice to rice husk is taken as 0.21 and ten tones of sugarcane are assumed to produce three tones of bagasse.  The electricity consumption of each district was estimated based on the population and per capita consumption details. The per capita consumption of electricity in Tamilnadu is 1000kWh. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology

Calculation of energy production  The energy output of the Gasifier obtained from the thermo chemical model.  The district wise production, energy potential and electricity consumption calculated. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology BiomassHigher Heating Value (HHV)kJ/kg Rice husk3660 Sugarcane Bagasse3910

Selection of Gasifier location  The feasible location for the Gasifier in TamilNadu state was determined using the open source GIS.  District wise rice husk production and energy potential, sugarcane bagasse production and potential, electricity consumption maps were generated using GIS.  The different layers created along with the road transportation map were overlayed and based on –the availability of raw materials –their ease to transport and –demand for the electricity the location for the Gasifier was identified. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology

Results and Discussions  Geospatial data were generated from the rice and sugarcane production, energy potential and transportation.  Spatial Analysis was done based on the availability of the raw material in the nearby vicinity, ease to transport and the electricity consumption in the neighboring district was analyzed and based on these observations the suitable location for the Gasifier was identified.  The Gasifier can be located in Ariyalur(L1) district which has relatively high raw material availability in the nearby vicinity.  The transportation from the districts like cuddalore, perambalur and sivaganga is easy as the national highways connect all these districts Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology Results and Discussions

Palani(L2) in dindigul and Rasipuram(L3) in Namakkal is to be more suitable based on the high availability of agricultural residues near the location and electricity demand is high Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology Results and Discussions

 Since the production is high in districts like Nammakal, Dindigul, Dharmapuri, Salem which are close to the identified location for Gasifier,  Analysis can be done to have a cost effective plant which can aid in satisfying the energy demand in a sustainable way.  Detailed analysis including the existing power generation circles their demand; cost analysis etc can give more optimized plant location.  In this way the proper approach in the selection of location will help in reducing the cost and installing the plant in the suitable place will help in mitigating the electricity problem and also helps in the socio economic development of the state. Asia Geospatial Forum, September 2012 Mapping of Energy Plant Location for Agriculture Biomass Using Geospatial Technology Results and Discussions

Acknowledgement  We would like thanks to Tamil Nadu Agriculture Ministry and Electricity Board for providing necessary data.  Also thanks to Dr.Srinivas, Energy Division for his suggestion upon Gasifier calculations.  Finally thanks to our Chancellor and Director (SMBS), VIT University for providing infrastructure and Department of Science and Technology (DST) India for financial support from the International Travel Grant (ITS).
