London is the capital city of the United Kingdom with population of almost 8 million. It‘s one of Europe‘s largest cities. It is situated on the River Thames. London is divided into two parts: The East End were homes of workers and poor people. The West End there are the financial and commercial centre with the Bank of England and other important business offices. There are a lot of sights in London.

Buckingham Palace is the royal residence. It is located in the City of Westminster. The palace is often at the centre of state occasions. Tourists come to see changing of the Guards. The guardsmen wear red coat and black helmet.

The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, commonly known as the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. The tower is now officially called the Elizabeth Tower.

Number 10 Downing Street is the headquarters and London residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The Tower of London is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. Tower Bridge (built 1886– 1894) is a bridge in London which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name, and has become an iconic symbol of London.

St. Paul´s Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals. The architect of this cathedral was Christopher Wren. There is a very interesting whispering gallery. If you whisper there, people hear you in the other side of this gallery. There prince Charles and princess Diana were married in 1981.

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich in London played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known as the location of the prime meridian. The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. It is currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel, the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3.5 million visitors annually.

Westminster Abbey is a large, mainly Gothic, church in the City of Westminster, London. It is one of the most notable religious buildings in the United Kingdom and is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and British monarchs. Nelson's Column is a monument in Trafalgar Square in central London built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Piccadilly Circus is a road junction and public space connecting Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. The Royal Albert Hall hosts concerts and musical events. Wembley Stadium is the home of the England football team.

Transport The best way to get around the city is by public transport: The underground – known as “the tube“ (built in 1863, the world‘s first underground train system). London‘s red double- decker buses are an internationally recognised trademark of London transport along with black cabs.

The largest parks in the central area of London are three of the Royal Parks: Hyde Park famous for its Speakers' Corner. Kensington Gardens at the western edge of central London. Regent's Park on the northern edge, contains London Zoo, the world's oldest scientific zoo, and is near the tourist attraction of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.
