The Time Allocation Survey (TAS) – Example Activities Department of Finance Julia Hastings – May 2011

Examples of activities and where they should be recorded in the TAS Faculty staff took part in an exercise to identify activities for which the TAS categorisation is not clear cut. The following slides highlight the most common ones.

Activities undertaken by academic staff Conference attendance: Paper preparation and presentation - record under the appropriate sponsored research category R2-R9 Travel time and time in other formal sessions of the conference – support/admin for research R1 Time outside formal sessions or travel should be excluded from the TAS

Activities undertaken by academic staff  Meetings/administration/correspondence:  If subject matter is specific to Teaching or Research or Other activities in some way record as support/admin for teaching T1, support/admin for research R1 or support/admin for other O1 as appropriate, e.g. examinations meetings - T1  If subject is not specific record as general support/admin G1, e.g. faculty board meetings

Activities undertaken by academic staff Unpaid esteem or business development work for outside bodies or external advisory boards: To promote widening participation – support/admin for teaching T1 To recruit PGR students – support/admin for PGR students P1 To set up student projects – record under the appropriate teaching delivery category T2-T5 To support new research possibilities – support/admin for research R1

Activities undertaken by academic staff Unpaid esteem or business development work for outside bodies or external advisory boards: If purpose for involvement is otherwise specific to Teaching or Research or Other activities in some way record as support/admin for teaching T1, support/admin for research R1 or support/admin for other O1 as appropriate If purpose is not specific – general support/admin G1 If work for external bodies has been privately contracted to the staff member the time should be excluded from the TAS

Activities undertaken by academic staff  Journal review and editing:  If contracted to the University – other activities O2  If privately contracted to the staff member the time should be excluded from the TAS  If not contracted to the University or individual – support for other O1  “Thinking time” and reading – intellectual input from academics – scholarship S1

Activities undertaken by academic staff  Course development:  Initial development where the future of the course is uncertain – support for teaching T1  Development of an agreed new course – record under the appropriate teaching delivery category T2- T5  Delivery of courses attended by mixed students (UG/PGT/PGR) – teaching of combined UG/PGT courses T4

Activities undertaken by administrative staff General recruitment / admissions / student interaction – support for teaching T1 Assessment and examination support work – support for teaching T1 University open/visit days – support for teaching T1 Widening participation / outreach activities – support for teaching T1

Activities undertaken by administrative staff General finance/purchasing activities – general support/admin G1 General estates activities – general support/admin G1 Staff management – general support/admin G1

Activities undertaken by administrative staff Training session attendance : If subject matter of training is specific to Teaching or Research or Other support activities in some way record as support/admin for teaching T1, support/admin for research R1 or support/admin for other O1 as appropriate If subject is not specific record as general support/admin G1, e.g. uBASE training

Activities undertaken by technical staff Delivery of training sessions for students: Taught students – support/admin for teaching T1 PGR students – support/admin for PGR students P1 Supervising or demonstrating practical sessions for taught students – record under the appropriate teaching delivery category T2-T5

Activities undertaken by technical staff Conducting or assisting in fieldwork: If taught students are doing the fieldwork – record under the appropriate teaching delivery category T2-T5 If it relates to research projects – record under the appropriate sponsored research category R2-R9

Activities undertaken by technical staff Equipment set-up/servicing/calibrating and software/hardware installation and maintenance: If equipment or software/hardware is teaching related – support/admin for teaching T1 If it is related to a specific research project – record under the appropriate sponsored research category R2-R9 If it is related to research in general – support/admin for research R1 If it is applicable across the whole department – general support/admin G1
