Why do you play games ? Main aims : -Getting the children to think about the reasons they play games. -Helping them become aware of the value of playing games. -Promoting motivation and self-esteem.

Linguistic aims : -Vocabulary improvement in L1 and L2. Social aims : -Learning to be part of a team. -Learning to follow rules. Other aims -Improving co-ordination and other skills.

Age : seven year-old pupils. Materials : a ball, some flashcards. Place : a gym or an area free of obstacles.

1° step Ask the pupils to sit down in a circle. Join the circle. Show them a ball on which you have beforehand drawn eyes, a nose and a mouth. Introduce the ball as a character saying : “Hello, Who am I?” Ask the children to give an answer “ a ball”. Give voice to the ball : “ I’m Mr Ball”. Procedure

2° step Ask the children if they like playing games and why. Most of the children answered by connecting the word “games” to “ happiness, joy, enjoyment, fun and laugh”.

Procedure 3° step Always by using the “talking ball” ask them what the ball can do. These are the actions mentioned by our pupils : “ roll, fly, bounce”. After this phase ask them which are the actions they can do while playing with a ball. Most of the children answered as follows: “ I can hit the ball with my hand, I can Kick it with my foot, I can bounce it, I can throw and catch it”.

Procedure 4 ° step -Miming Ask the children to stand in a circle and to pretend to have a ball. Explain that you will give them instructions which should be mimed. “ Listen and do the actions Slap the ball, punch the ball, hit the ball, catch the ball, bounce the ball, roll the ball”

Procedure Keep on giving other instructions like : “Use your hands to hit, slap, punch…the ball. Use your feet to kick, bounce, roll the ball. Use your head to hit the ball.”

Procedure 5° step Draw the following graph on the board. Parts of the body Actions Hands head feet

Procedure Use flashcards for the parts of the body and the actions. Divide the children into two teams (for example : lions and tigers) Attach the actions flashcards on the wall underneath or beside the board. Explain the game to the children. When you name a part of the body the representative of each team has to run, choose the right action related to the named part and attach it to the graph next to the body part. The first who does right is the winner. Carry on with this activity until all the team members have a go.
