3 DH – Leading the nation’s health and care Our Commitment We will keep you informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations, and provide feedback We will gather feedback from stakeholders where industry responses differ to our proposed approach

4 DH – Leading the nation’s health and care CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS The Department of Health (DH) commissioned GS1 to examine options for product classification for the healthcare system, which resulted in the following recommendations: 1.All products in the NHS datapool should be classified by a GS1 Global Product Classification (GPC) code 2.Additionally all medical devices should be classified by a Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) code 3.Additionally all medicines should be classified by a SNOMED CT code 4.NHS-eClass codes should be used during the transition to the above classification systems. –All medical devices with NHS-eClass classification codes should be transitioned to GMDN –Any medicines with NHS-eClass classification codes should transition to SNOMED CT –All other products with NHS-eClass classification codes should transition to GPC 5.To facilitate this transition, the DH will work with GS1 and the GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) to extend GPC to cover any product categories that are not adequately covered by the above classification systems
