NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) - legacy Mission: Timely delivery of critical weather information Description: NWWS is a satellite data collection and redistribution system operated by the National Weather Service (NWS). NWWS singular purpose is to provide timely meteorological, hydrological, climatological, and geophysical information to state and federal governments, emergency managers, commercial users, media outlets (television, radio, social), and the general public. Change is coming in 2014-2015 New things will appear 2014 SBN Channel 201 (NWWS only products) is operational for review this October 2014 Still in Development for 2015 Open Interface (OI) – still in development Nlets Interface – currently under test

NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) - 2 Mission: Timely delivery of critical weather information (No change) Description: NWWS is a satellite data collection and redistribution system operated by the National Weather Service (NWS). NWWS singular purpose is to provide timely meteorological, hydrological, climatological, and geophysical information to state and federal governments, emergency managers, commercial users, media outlets (television, radio, social), and the general public. (No change) NWWS-2 Future Configuration SBN/NOAAPORT Channels 101-105 – all NWS products (including NWWS) Channel 201 – NWWS products only SBN/NOAAPORT NIDS NWWS chat (Java script) NWWS products also on http://alerts.weather.gov (various formats) http://weather.gov NIDS Nlets

Planned NWWS configuration NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) 2014-2015 NWWS will be adding to the dissemination streams starting this Fall. The NWWS will operate similar to the current contractor leased system, with dissemination of weather data via: C-band satellite (SBN/NOAAPORT Channels 101-105 and Channel 201 for dedicated NWWS only products) an Internet-based method known as the "Open Interface," UNDER DEVELOPMENT the International Justice and Public Safety Network (Nlets), UNDER DEVELOPMENT NOTE: The “Nlets” system has a private data stream for law enforcement/emergency management networks not open to the general public. Users of NWWS will be given the opportunity to stay with their current configuration (as CSC remains an NWS client/user) or change to the new/proposed system and interfaces.  SUMMARY Current Leased System Planned NWWS configuration C-band satellite (NO CHANGE) CSC Satellite System   Calypso Receiver SBN/NOAAPORT http://www.nws.noaa.gov/noaaport/html/noaaport.shtml NOVRA S300 or similar compatible Receiver and EMWIN Satellites http://www.nws.noaa.gov/emwin/index.htm Internet “Open Interface” “pull” (Delivery Change) --------- Current; Internet via http://weather.gov http://alerts.weather.gov http://nws.noaa.gov/datamgmt/fos/fospage.html Spring 2015: XMPP/chat room environment Text Format(s) WMO WMO, CAP v1.1 and CAP v1.2* Internet Open Interface “push” connectivity CSC service NLETS Planned for Spring 2015 *Common Alert Protocol (CAP) format is for alert text messages only. CAPv1.2 integration is TBD. Only CAP v1.2 is compatible for Emergency Alert System (EAS) activation.

C-band satellite Open Interface CSC Satellite Service No change. (Service is expected to operate into 2015.) SBN/NOAAPORT Satellite Service Channels 101-105 = no change Channel 201 will require the change identified to the right Users can continue to re-use the outdoor antennas they already have in place (which will not require re-pointing), but will need 1) a new satellite receiver, 2) new Low Noise Block (LNB) down converter, and 3) new (or modified) weather data display software (NWS End User Client or similar). EMWIN Satellite Service (NO CHANGE) Satellite dish will need repointing. New hardware and software will need to be added. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/emwin/user-intro.htm Open Interface CSC capability WMO text products No change to CSC, Marta, or current display software. National Weather Service http://weather.gov (NO CHANGE) All WMO text products (including alerts and warnings) by County May need to modify or purchase new display software to pull desired products. National Weather Service http://alerts.weather.gov ****Alerts and Warnings Only**** RSS and ATOM feeds by State WMO and CAP v1.1 text products National Weather Service Open Interface Will need End User Client (EUC) software or similar

Direct socket feed, no change No change to current display software. NWWS products are also available over the SBN/NOAAPORT (Channels 101-105), Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (EMWIN) satellite product stream and via the NWS Family of Services (all NWS and NWWS products). Family of Services is a NWS for-fee dissemination capability. “Push” Connectivity CSC capability Direct socket feed, no change No change to current display software. National Weather Service NO CHANGE Family of Services (FoS) Option This is a “for fee” service. http://nws.noaa.gov/datamgmt/fos/fospage.html National Weather Service has not determined if there will be a “push” capability in the future. As NWWS proceeds with the transition, your cooperation, collaboration, and input are appreciated. Please feel free to contact NWS for more information about the upcoming change(s) or to provide input on system capabilities and proposed distribution methods and shortfalls of the available options.
