Upcoming Events Singapore AOGS meeting –(Pacific rim AGU meeting) ICRC
2005 January 20 GLE Biggest GLE since 1956 Very anisotropic –Some stations measured no increase. Associated with X7 flare –Big, but not huge –Strong and fast CME—producing shock
Relatively stable period for particles during flare activity
Tail of event has different spectrum (depth dependent)
Science Questions Climax/Milagro appears to be in the cross hairs. Spectrum of prompt particles. Spectrum and interpretation of secondary bump Interpretation of tail kink.
Outstanding Tasks Interplanetary conditions? –Solar wind speed (guiding center path) –Turbulence level (rise time) (appears to be low) CME lift-off time and speed. (Release time) Hard X-ray onset time. Signals from other NMs to ‘estimate’ anisotropy. (1/cos ) Instantaneous cutoff ridigities for Climax/Fenton Hill/MW/Durham
Halloween Event
Science Questions Spectrum of Decrease Anisotropy of Decrease –Depends on magnetic fields 1.In front of shock 2.Behind shock 3.Inside ejecta 4.Behind ejecta –Should see A change in time.
Tasks Need a muon fitter to study triggered events. Need correction factors for long periods, i.e., days. –Which way does temperature effect go and how large is it?
Potential Author Issues Will necessarily rely on input from other investigators. Can assess how much we can do on our own without new info from outsiders. Subsequent publications will involve others, but Milagro data (mostly) may be published.
