Assignment 5: Monitoring Healthy Body Systems Totton College: BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care Date Issued: 14/3/13 Date Due: 29/4/13 Date Submitted: IV Assignment Brief: IV Assessment Decision: NAME: Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care Assignment 5: Monitoring Healthy Body Systems LEARNING OUTCOMES GRADE CRITERIA AVAILABLE TARGET GRADE GRADE ACHIEVED Understand how homeostatic mechanisms operate in the maintenance of an internal environment Be able to interpret data from monitoring routine activities with reference to the functioning of healthy body systems P5 P6 M2 M3 D2

Totton College: BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care GRADE CRITERIA: P5: Explain the concept of homeostasis P6: Follow guidelines to interpret collected data for heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and after a standard period of exercise M3: Present data collected before and after a standard period of exercise with reference to validity Task 1 (P5, P6, M3): Task 1a: Using annotated diagrams, explain the concept of homeostasis using examples of the homeostatic mechanisms involved in regulating heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature. Task 1b: Working in pairs, measure the heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and after a standard period of exercise (The Harvard Step Test) (P6) Task 1c: Record your data in tables and charts and comment on the validity of your results (M3) Task 1d: Interpret your data by stating what it tells you about the changes that are taking place inside the body during and in a period straight after the exercise period (P6) Tips: Make sure that you use scientific terms accurately and appropriately If you download images from the internet they must be properly referenced you need at least 6 references in your booklet – if you are struggling to find 6 it probably means that you have not done enough research and you will struggle to get the merit and distinction grades.

Write a report of 1300 (+ or – 10%) which includes: GRADE CRITERIA: M2: Discuss the probable homeostatic responses to changes in the internal environment during exercise D2: Evaluate the importance of homeostasis in maintaining the healthy functioning of the body Task 2 (M2, D2): Write a report of 1300 (+ or – 10%) which includes: A discussion of the probable homeostatic responses to changes in the environment inside the body brought about by exercise. Include the need for more oxygen and glucose, and the mechanisms for preventing systems overcompensating (M2) (approximately 300 words) An evaluation of the importance of homeostasis in maintaining the healthy functioning of the body. Discuss the purpose of homeostasis and the consequences of homeostasis going wrong (D2) (approximately 1000 words)

Totton College: BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care GRADE CRITERIA: P5: Explain the concept of homeostasis M2: Discuss the probable homeostatic responses to changes in the internal environment during exercise D2: Evaluate the importance of homeostasis in maintaining the healthy functioning of the body P6: follow guidelines to interpret collected data for heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and after a standard period of exercise M3: present data collected before and after a standard period of exercise with reference to validity Tips: Your report must be formally constructed i.e.: Introduced (What is the report about? What will you be doing? What conclusion will you come to?) Concluded (What was your report about? ) Include paragraph breaks Write in full sentences; don’t abbreviate words; don’t use ‘slang’ or ‘text’ language. Avoid the future tense (e.g. this essay will be looking at...). By the time I read it you’ve written it. Stick to the past or the present tense. Make sure that you spell check and grammar check carefully. A report may contain headings, tables, charts, diagrams and bulleted lists (label carefully) X Don’t use words like ‘I’, ‘we’, ‘our’, ‘you’, ‘your’ (e.g. ‘our society’, ‘I think that…’, ‘we all know that…’ etc). Reference using the Harvard referencing style (if you download pictures from the internet you must reference them) You should have at least 6 references – if you are struggling you are probably not doing enough research for the merit and distinction grades

Totton College: BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care Assignment 4: Monitoring Healthy Body Systems PLAGIARISM STATEMENT Plagiarism is a serious offence and any words or images whether direct or indirect must be properly referenced both in the text of your writing (author surname, year of publication and page number) and on a separate Reference Page at the end of your assignment (e.g surname, initial, year, title, place and publisher). It is essential in academic work to research the work and words of others and this should be used throughout your assignments. However, to copy that work even if you change words around, without saying where you got it from, is intellectually dishonest and regarded as cheating. Please read the HARVARD REFERENCING SYSTEM for help with referencing if you are still unsure. I have read the statement above on plagiarism and state that this piece of work is my own and does not contain any unacknowledged work from any other source.
