Sales Presentation November 2010 3M™ Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Cable Assemblies “Enabling performance of next generation 2 mm Hard Metric systems” This is the introduction slide for UHM connector and THE key message we want to make with the potential customer at the beginning and end of this presentation is that the UHM connector system enables the performance of next generation 2mm Hard Metric systems. Start by introducing 3M’s new Ultra Hard Metric Connector, as the industry’s first fully-shielded, lowest crosstalk 2mm Hard Metric connector. And will want to state that our key objective today is to DEMONSTRATE how 3M’s new Ultra Hard Metric Connector can improve and enable the performance of 2mm Hard Metric Backplane designs. 2 mm Hard Metric Connector - Backplane Workhorse for 10+ yrs…. 2 mm Hard Metric Connectors Industry’s most successful backplane connector system with a 10+ year history Adopted by many backplane standards CompactPCI® VME 64x PXI Right Angle Female Receptacle ( Socket ) Vertical Male Pin Header Widely available globally from many connector manufacturers Key drivers of success High Density 2 mm x 2 mm pitch Available in various form factors (A,B,C,AB,D,E,F,DE) Competitive pricing - inexpensive Typical Applications – Embedded Computers, Telecom, Medical, Military, Test & Measurement Systems As most of you are already know, 2mm Hard Metric Connectors have been an industry work horse for many years. This is evidenced by their adoption into many popular backplane standards such as cPCI, VME 64x and PXI for example. The reasons why they have been so successful is that 2mm connector system obviously increases signal density over .100” systems, is available in various modular form factors and is a cost effective connector system. It is ALSO important to note that these same reasons for success are STILL true even today so we expect 2mm HM systems to be widely used for many years. 2 mm Hard Metric Connector - Backplane Workhorse for 10+ yrs…. © 3M 2009. However...Today’s Applications are more demanding FROM TO Legacy Bus Backplane 32/64 bit PCI Bus 10/100M Ethernet VME Bus High Speed Serial Backplane PCI Express (5 Gbps) GigE /10G (1.25/10 Gbps) XAUI (3.125 Gbps) Rapid IO (2.5 G/s) Infiniband (2/4/8 Gbps) Legacy Parallel IO SCSI 10/100M Ethernet RS 232 PCI/VME Bus High Speed Serial IO SAS/SATA (3/6 Gb/s) Gig E (1.25 G/s) USB 3.0 (5 Gb/s) Infiniband (2/4/8 Gb/s) LVDS (1.5 Gb/s) In addition however, I am sure you are also aware that there has been rapid changes in digital signal transmission trends impacting these backplane systems. As shown here going from low speed parallel bus applications to high density - high speed serial point-to-point differential signal transmission as adopted by signaling protocols such as SATA/SAS , PCI Express, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, etc and as a result Today’s Systems require very high densities of multi-Gb/s diff. signals Space and Power constraints driving need for high density in addition to high speed Today’s systems require very high densities of multi-Gbps diff. signals © 3M 2009. 3M™ Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Connector Product Availability and Roadmap 2009 (Available Now) 2010 2011 7+ Gbps UHM sockets mated with std. 2 mm HM header NEW 12 Gbps UHM Cable Assemblies 10 GBASE-KR UHM System UHM sockets 5 Row and 8 Row Types A, B, C, D, E, F, AB, DE UHM B22 Socket specified in next generation PICMG 2.30 Compact PCI draft Standard So here we show what we are able to offer today to improve the performance of your 2mm HM backplane systems. TODAY 3M is able to offer a fully shielded Ultra Hard Metric Socket that when mated to a standard 2mm Hard Metric Header is able to transmit 7+ Gbps. This UHM right angle socket comes in 5 and 8 rows with the various format types established by 2mm HM standard. ( i.e., Type A, B, C...for example ). In particular though we want to especially highlight the B22 connector which is the J2 connector specified in the PICMG 2.30 Compact PCI DRAFT standard. As you can see here we currently working on a UHM HEADER in order to improve speeds with a target of 10 -12 Gbps. CompactPCI® 6U Applications ( user defined pinout ) Need: A connector to Increase functionality and throughput through J2, J3, J4, J5 (6U) connector of CompactPCI embedded computers for a user defined application specific pinout Solution: Use appropriate 3M™ Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Connector enabled Multi-Gigabit Serial data links through J2/J3/J4/J5 connector 6U Front Plug-in board 6U Rear Plug-in board rP5 rP4 rP3 P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 J5 J4 Type B22 Type A25 J2 J1 J3 Type B19 Type AB 22pos This is an example of a how one can use a user defined backplane system based on CompactPCI backplane standard 3U or 6U systems by using the J2, J3, J4 or J5 connectors by creating a pinout which will support multiple high speed serial protocols ( see list in slide ). A solution would be to use the appropriate 3M UHM connector as all of the 5 row formats will be made available. rJ5 Type A 25pos rJ4 Cable I/O rJ3 Type AB 19pos 11 © 3M 2009.
