Huskers From Space Using Images from Space to Teach Geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High / Liberty, Missouri / USA

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: OBJECTIVE: Teach students about the physical geographical features of an area using images taken from space by the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. MEDIUM: Microsoft PowerPoint SOURCE OF INFORMATION: NASA’s Earth From Space web site

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: “Huskers From Space” is used to teach the geography of the state of Nebraska. Where is Nebraska? What is a “Husker”?

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: METHOD: The teacher collects images from space of the desired area. Almost every area on earth has been photographed from space by NASA. Images are available to use without copyright restrictions for teachers. NASA requests proper citation when using images. NASA’s EARTH FROM SPACE WEB SITE: “Earth From Space” is a huge database of images with complete data on each image – where it was taken, when it was taken, special features of note, type of camera, etc. Collection is organized according to special categories and location.

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: The teacher then creates a PowerPoint template using the images obtained for that area. No labeling of landmarks is used on the slide. This image of south central Nebraska shows several small cities, rivers, roads, airports, etc. This is the mission roll frame information which is unique for each image.

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: Students are given a short text description of the area shown on the image and a list of physical features to label – towns, roads, rivers, landmarks, etc. Students then use the drawing and text tools in PowerPoint to label the image.

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: Students display their finished slide to their classmates – pointing out all the landmarks they labeled. Students are also encouraged to attempt to identify other landmarks not required on the list.

HUSKERS FROM SPACE Using images from space to teach geography Eric Langhorst – South Valley Jr. High School – Liberty, Missouri / Class site: This image shows a teacher’s key of all the physical landmarks required to be labeled by the students.
