FUN, CHALLENGING, CREATIVE, EXCITING DEVELOP SKILLS, DESIGN & MAKE PRODUCTS Throughout these courses there is a large emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS – 2009 TO 2011 Four subject areas: AQA Product Design OCR Graphics OCR Textiles BTEC First diploma in Hospitality

GCSE PRODUCT DESIGN Key points: ● 3 lessons per week (Typical format: 2 project based, 1 subject theory). ● 60% Coursework assignment ● 40% exam (2 hour written exam) ● One tier exam system – A* to G ● No material constraints. You choose the material that is best suited to the product you design. ● An opportunity to study ‘conceptual design’ (that doesn’t have to function). ● Design, make, package and market approach with a focus on ‘creativity’. ● Sketchbooks are used to document your design/development work. ● Opportunity to use a wide range of processes & techniques including CAD/CAM, electronics & PIC CHIP technology, textiles, woodwork, plastics manufacturing, graphics & packaging, smart & recycled materials.

GCSE GRAPHICS Key points: ●3 lessons per week (Typical format: 2 project based, 1 subject theory). ● 60% Coursework assignment. ● 40% exam (1hour 30minutes written exam x2). ● One tier exam system – A* to G ● Graphical based materials used throughout the course. ● No longer required to sit a ‘technical drawing based exam’. ● Cardboard engineering and modelling in 3D. ● Focus on presentation and desk top publishing. ● Opportunity to use a range of drawing skills & techniques including: technical, formal, 2dimensional, 3dimensional, rendering, the use of ICT (CAD).

GCSE TEXTILES Key points: ●3 lessons per week (Typical format: 2 project based, 1 subject theory). ● 60% Coursework assignment. ● 40% exam (1hour 30minutes written exam x2). ● One tier exam system – A* to G ● Fabric/textiles based materials used throughout the course. ● Dress making, interiors & furnishings, toys & games. ● Pattern making and testing of fabrics. ● Focus on machining and embroidery skills. ● Opportunity to use a range of techniques including: embroidery, appliqué’, garment construction, decoration techniques,

BTEC FIRST DIPLOMA IN HOSPITALITY Key points: This course is a vocational/applied learning option within the DT options structure ●6 lessons per week (Typical format: 4 practical based, 2 subject theory). Two double and two single lessons. ● 100% coursework assignment. ● Assessed by internally set assignments. ● 360 Guided learning hours delivered in six units over the two year course. ● Provides knowledge and skills to access any career linked to the hospitality industry. ● Hospitality events based at CVC and out of school in commercial facilities. ● Opportunity to use industrial catering equipment. ● You will be expected to wear a catering uniform. ● Opportunity to prepare and cook a wide range of different dishes. ● This course is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s.
