 “Teaching and learning demonstrates that all teachers are responsible for language development of students.”

 Theory of Knowledge asks students to explore the question “How do you know that you know _______?”  Four “Ways of Knowing” are used to explore distinct “Areas of Knowledge”  Language is one of these Ways of Knowing used as a tool for discovery

 What is language? What qualifies as language and what does not?  Why is it important for us to be clear about the meanings of words?  Does language determine thought and our experience of reality?  In what ways is the slogan “language is power” true? In what ways does language create or reinforce power?

 What is “light” in its scientific (i.e. Physics) definition?  What are your associations with “Sunlight”?  Now read the poem on p.40 in the packet. Does sunlight factually “harden and grow cold”? Why or why not?

 Look at the list of roles on p.42 in your packet  What would you add as uses of language based on your area of expertise? What do you observe in your students?

 Read each pair of texts on p.44  Do you perceive these experiences differently? Why or why not?

 Use some of these ideas to spark thinking about HOW we use and develop language to guide students learning in various subject areas.
