Attendance is the key to being successful. You cannot earn points if you are absent from school.

Years 7-10 Students in Years 7-10 must earn 3,500 points across the year to earn a place on the GIR Winners Trip. However, students will not be allowed to go on the trip under the following circumstances even if they earn more than 3,500 points: If you receive more than 3 C4s during the year If your attendance is below 85% at the end of the year If you are late to school more than 25 times during the year Year 11 Students in Year 11 must earn 3,000 points between terms 1A – 3A to earn a place on the GIR Winners Trip. The trip will take place in the summer term at the end of the exam period. However, if students fail to meet the expectations outlined above they will lose their place on the trip even if they earn more than 3,000 points.

Getting It Right Awards Students will be awarded certificates to reflect the GIR achievements. The certificates will be tiered to acknowledge the levels of achievement and engagement in lessons: Years 7-10 GIR GOLD certificate = student earns 4,000 points GIR SILVER certificate = student earns 3,750 points GIR BRONZE certificate = student earns 3,500 points GIR Level 2 certificate = student earns 2,300 points GIR Level 1 certificate = student earns 1,100 points Year 11 GIR GOLD certificate = student earns 3,500 points GIR SILVER certificate = student earns 3,250 points GIR BRONZE certificate = student earns 3,000 points GIR Level 2 certificate = student earns 2,000 points GIR Level 1 certificate = student earns 1,000 points

THE GOLDEN TICKET SCHEME Each half-term every teacher will be given 5 golden tickets to issue to every year group. A ‘Golden Ticket’ can only be awarded if a student produces an exceptional piece of work or acts in a way that goes beyond expectations. It is not just to reward students for doing what is expected – it a reward for those students who go beyond what is expected of them. When a student receives a ‘Golden Ticket’ it is their responsibility to hand the ticket in to student reception. At the end of each term there will be a prize draw for each year group. The student with the winning ticket will win a special individual prize.

The Golden Ticket Scheme Any student who earns a ‘Golden Ticket’ will automatically win 250 bonus points for the ‘Incentive Scheme’. If a student earns five ‘Golden Tickets’ during the year they will earn an additional 500 bonus points and win a special individual prize at the end of the year.

We expect that in all classrooms there should be 5 times as much praise as there are consequences © REWARDS All staff will issue at least 20 merits each half term. All staff will issue at least ten Praise Cards each term. All staff will issue Community Award Certificate if students participate in activities. 25 are required for a Bronze Certificate 50 for a Silver Certificate 100 for a Gold Certificate 150 for a Platinum Certificate 250 for a Diamond Certificate. 350 for an Emerald Certificate.

© This is the highest level of reward we have at Hillcrest. A Hillcrest Superstar will be someone who at the end of the year – Earns 3,500 GIR points (years 7-10) or 3,000 GIR points (year 11) 100 or more Merit points recorded in their planner (Gold Level) 6 Community Certificates Hillcrest Superstars will receive a special certificate and their names will be displayed on a Roll of Honour. They will also be awarded with a special Headteacher’s tie – one which is a different design to the rest of the school’s tie.

THE INCENTIVE SCHEME TUTOR GROUP ATTENDANCE Your tutor group will earn points each week based on their attendance figures: 100% Attendance = win 50 points 99-97% Attendance = win 30 points 96-95% = win 20 points 94% = win 10 points INDIVIDUAL ATTENDANCE You can earn 50 bonus points for your tutor group each half- term if your attendance is 100% INDIVIDUAL PUNCTUALITY You can earn 25 bonus points for your tutor group if you arrive to school on time every day during a half-term. ‘GETTING IT RIGHT’ You can earn bonus points for your tutor group based on your GIR points: GIR Gold Certificate = win 200 bonus points GIR Silver Certificate = 150 bonus points GIR Bronze Certificate = 100 bonus points GIR Level 2 Certificate = 75 bonus points GIR Level 1 certificate = 50 bonus points

THE INCENTIVE SCHEME MERITS You can earn extra bonus points for your tutor group based on the following number of merits: 25 merits (BRONZE) = 10 points 50 merits (SILVER) = 20 points 100 merits (GOLD) = 30 points 150 merits (PLATINUM) = 50 points 250 merits (DIAMOND) = 100 points 350 merits (EMERALD) = 200 points Hillcrest Superstar You can earn 500 bonus points for your tutor group if you become a Hillcrest Superstar. By the end of the year students will: · Achieve GIR Gold Certificate · Achieve at least GOLD for merits · Receive 6 Community Certificates The Golden Tickets You can earn 250 bonus points for each ‘Golden Ticket’ you win. You can earn 500 additional bonus points if you win five ‘Golden Tickets’. Incentive = winning tutor group wins a full day off timetable at the end of the year to organise activities of their own choice!!

ZONES OF ENGAGEMENT GREEN ZONE:I am on target to keep my GIR point. My behaviour, effort and engagement is the best it can possibly be. I am working hard and I am focused on my learning. If I maintain this level of engagement I will make or exceed my level of expected progress PURPLE ZONE: I have received a C1 because I have not brought my homework / equipment or I have arrived late. I must now show my teacher I am ready to learn. BLUE ZONE : I have received a warning from my teacher and I am in danger of losing my GIR point. I am not as focused on my learning as I should be and need to focus more on my learning to avoid getting a C1 Purple Zone: I have received a C1 and lost 5 GIR points I am not engaging in my learning despite receiving a warning. I am not giving 100% effort and, as a result, there is a chance I will not make my expected progress. I must learn from this mistake and concentrate more to avoid further consequences. Blue Zone warning AMBER ZONE : I have ignored warnings and received a C2 (lost 10 GIR points) I have continued to not co-operate with the expectations of my teacher and have not focused on my learning despite being asked to by my teacher. I am in danger of not making my expected progress in the lesson due to my lack of focus. RED ZONE: I have received a C3, lost 15 GIR points and will serve a 30 minute detention. I am continuing not to engage in my learning and, as a result, I am not making my expected progress and my behaviour is affecting the progress of others. It is essential I engage more in the lesson otherwise I will miss out on more learning if I am sent to room 35 for receiving a C4 I have received a C4, lost 20 GIR points and will serve a 60 minute detention because learning has not been my main priority. I will not make my expected progress this lesson

© Staff SHOULD always respond appropriately to inappropriate language: If a student shouts inappropriate comments across the classroom to another / other students the student should receive a C1 (No initial warning needed depending on the inappropriateness of the comments) If staff hear inappropriate language of a racist / discriminatory nature or verbal / threats of physical violence against another student, a C4 should be issued and the offending student sent to the Centre If staff hear inappropriate language directed to them or about them the student should be sent to the Centre (C4) Loud enough to be heard ….. Loud enough to be punished!

© Drinking in a ICT room will receive a C1 (No initial warning required) Students on inappropriate web sites in lessons should receive a C1 (only issue a C1 after giving the students an initial warning to continue with the set work) Students on the internet when they should be working should receive a C1 (only issue a C1 after giving the students an initial warning to continue with the set work) Downloading of inappropriate material from the internet should receive a C3 Any inappropriate messages sent via the internet or mobile phones should receive a C4 Recording any member of the school community without their permission is not allowed. The recording, displaying, supply or posting of any such materials will result in a C5 exclusion.

© The school does not take responsibility for inappropriate use of digital media outside of school hours or outside of the school premises. Such issues which affect the running of the school will result in the involvement of any appropriate agency (e.g. the Police) and the school following the ‘Getting it Right policy towards the individual’.

© Drinking in a lesson is not a right – permission has to be given by the teacher. Water bottles are then to be used as instructed by the teacher Clear water is the only drink allowed during lesson times Water bottles are not to be filled during lesson time If a student drinks any other form of liquid (ie – Coca Cola) or is seen eating food / chewing gum an initial warning should be given and followed up with a C1 if the student fails to stop eating, drinking or chewing.

© Students should wear only one set of ear studs – one in each ear. Further items of jewellery should be confiscated by staff Refusal to hand over an item = member of staff should issue a C4 Any student wearing a coat in a lesson should be issued with a C1 and the coat confiscated Staff should issue a C3 if a student’s mobile phone / IPOD is visible in lessons / around the school and confiscate the item. Students who refuse to hand over the mobile phone / IPOD should be issued with a C4 and sent to the Centre – report to Learning Coordinator if incident happens around school

© There are no warnings for misbehaviour around school – C3 detention is given for ….. –Running or making inappropriate noise in school (if a student continues to run and not stop to give their name they will get a C4) –Eating / drinking in the corridors –Being in the wrong toilet (not including lesson times) If mobile phones are seen or heard they will be confiscated and a C3 will be issued. Refusal to hand over a phone will result in a C4. Learning Coordinator or SLT will then resolve the issue

© The Education and Inspections act (2006) gives schools the right to search students who it is believed have items which are banned from the school premises. Examples may include weapons or drugs. 1.The student will be informed that a search will take place. 2.Any search will be conducted by a Senior member of Staff and a witness. 3.Parents / Carers will be informed and if necessary the Police 4.If a student refuses to cooperate then both Parents / Carers and the Police will be called immediately to the school premises If it is believed that a student has any such item the following process will take place:

© Each year group has its own designated toilets (different for lesson times!) Any student in the wrong toilet will get a C3 Any student smoking in any toilet will be excluded (C5)* Any student who is standing with, or talking to a student who is smoking, will be excluded (C5) * As of July 1 st 2007 it will be illegal to smoke in a public place. This includes school premises and applies to all members of the school community. Any one breaking this law may face legal action.
