A2 Physiology Learning Outcomes Introduce the content of the course All able to remember the structure and function of skeletal muscles Most can understand how the theory applies to our muscles function. Some will be able to create links between the structure and movement

A2 Physiology Introducing me activity Lesson structure A2 Physiology content Weebly

Homework Read pages p32-39 A2 Physical Education textbook Prepare for exam question on skeletal muscle Watch video on weebly and complete sheet on sliding filament theory.

Functions of the muscular system Movement; Helps other body systems to work; i.e. Circulatory and Respiratory Systems. Develops strength and speed. Why is this important to know?

Types of muscle 3 different types of muscle –Cardiac – Involuntary –Smooth – Involuntary –Skeletal muscle – Voluntary, Striped, Striated muscle

Skeletal Muscle Function Example: any muscle attached to a bone for movement. Help give you your shape Work under our control Responsible for movement

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Task: Fill in missing gaps on diagram Useful NB: There are often common prefixes in anatomy and physiology that may help you remember i.e. · epi means upon or on; · peri means around; · endo means within; · myo means muscle

Structure of the Skeletal muscle

Task: Use definitions to complete the first half of the table on structure

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Epimysium: A layer of connective tissue that surrounds the skeletal muscles Fasciculi: Muscle fibres are arranged in groups/bundles Perimysium: A layer of connective tissue that surrounds the bundles of fibres Endomysium: Fibrous connective tissue that surrounds each individual fibre Fibres: Structural cells of the muscle that contracts when stimulated, also known as muscle cell

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Task: Fill in missing gaps on diagram

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Individual muscle fibres are made up of hundreds of smaller elements called MYOFIBRILS. These contain proteins responsible for muscles contraction, ACTIN and MYOSIN. Together they form the contractile units, the SACROMERES.

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Task: Use definitions to complete the second half of the table on structure

Structure of the Skeletal muscle Myofibrils: Part of a muscle fibre, contains sacromeres and protein filament Sarcomeres: The repeating unit of a myofibril, goes from one Z line to another. Sacrolemma: Fibres cell membrane Sacroplasm: The cells cytoplasm, a gelatinous fluid which fills most cells Sacroplasmic reticulum: network of channels over the surface of the myofibrils, store for Calcium Myosin: Thick protein filament Actin: Thin protein filament

A2 Physiology Learning Outcomes All able to remember the structure and function of skeletal muscles Most can understand how the theory applies to our muscles function. Some will be able to create links between the structure and movement
