BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica The digitization project channels the contribution of Spain to Europeana 6

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica The Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Launched in the web in January 2008 with works - currently has 16,000 works- representing the diversity of supports in the patrimonial collections. Some pages with OAI/PMH. Image format : TIFF, JPG, JP2 and PDF using DigiTool software. Quality selection of materials by several interdisciplinary academic committees. Target audience: research and studies on Hispanic culture and its promotion worldwide The whole BDH is accessible in TEL and Europeana 7

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Strategic partner agreement with Telefónica for large scale digitization project Signed end January 2008 as a result of successful launching (visits, downloading and media coverage). The 5-year agreement amounts a contribution of 10 million euros + technical assessment. The collections to be digitised -up to documents-, may include different types of material selected through a thematic approach for the best representation of the Spanish culture Printed books Drawings, engraves and photographs Manuscripts 330

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica BDH functionalities DigiTool search engine + virtual collections for easy reference. Various presentations of retrieved results. BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica New value-added service starting on May 2009 Printing on demand through a non-exclusive agreement with BUBOK (Spain). This service means a new “life” for BNE digital collections through their permanent inclusion in this powerful commercial platform. It offers end users a practical alternative to the printing functionality at a reasonable cost. The ordered title is shipped in printed form to the customer in fifteen days. Currently available for all digital documents included in Obras Maestras collection. More than 200 titles offered by the BDH. BNE is discussing terms and contract conditions with AMAZON (USA). 11

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica 12

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica 13

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Another digital collection : Historic Press Spanish press titles from XVIII th to early XX th century. Currently includes over 407 titles (about 4 million pages). PDFs with OCR treatment ingested in a proprietary software for research and retrieval via web. Nevertheless, blossom up new ideas for this application in the near future… HEMEROTECA DIGITAL 14

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Goals for the near future (I) New digitised documents will comply with international digital standards (DC, OAI-PMH) and will be made available for citizens through Europeana and other international projects. Looking for preservation of our knowledge resources over the long term. Both departments, Preservation and Digitization, are working together in order to assure not only the traditional printed books durability over the time, but also the new digital documents preservation. The BDH system will integrate existing digital historic press collection (Hemeroteca Digital) 15

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Goals for the near future (II) Due to the raise in number and types of digital contents, there is room for a new collection structure. The new classification will follow UDC’s mains subjects. An innovative search engine will be applied to improve the quality of query results. It allows the following functionalities Accuracy and Context : From a contextual understanding of any document, it suggests other documents that have matching concepts without relying on keywords. Parsing and Natural Language Analysis : It uses rules of grammar and lexicons within a given text and tries to explicitly understand textual information. The Snippet View : Will be used for copyrighted books allowing the preview of a few pages of the book. 16

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Goals for the near future (III) Interactive Book : Online application that makes the BNE masterpieces available to the general public on the internet, in a compelling 3D environment. It enhances the reading experience with contextual information and multimedia contents. It's a true next-generation web application, taking advantage of the latest web technologies. 17

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica BNE participation in European projects Beyond chairing the Spanish National Commission on digitization (libraries, archives, museums and film archives) the BNE is an active member of CENL and individual partner in several projects : EUROPEANA EDL Foundation TEL Plus MICHAEL PLUS ENRICH ARROW PEARL ePressNet BPN NUMERIC LTP (Long Term Preservation) 18

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica Along 2009… Inspired in the French Gallica2 the recently started ODI-BNE project, in joint-venture with the Spanish Federation of Publishers, will add to the BDH an experimental platform of some copyright-protected books with an optional purchase of printed and/or electronic versions. Its triple objective : provide a new, awaited service to users, analyze its impact in the conventional book trade and develop e-content trade in Spain. Internet archiving of domain “.es” starts. The BNE is promoting a cooperative digital project with National Libraries of Latin America with special emphasis on materials related to the Independences of America. 19

BNE’s Biblioteca Digital Hispánica BNE´s presence in the Net… A new website with more functionalities. Facebook account that already attracted over fans since its creation end November YouTube channel since May
