Backcourt (Rule 9-9) To present to the chapter the methods of properly administering: Backcourt Violation

Backcourt The York Chapter Basketball Officials will be able to: Demonstrate when a backcourt violation has occurred.

Backcourt (9-9) ART. 1. A player shall not be the first to touch the ball after it has been in team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt. ART. 2 While in player and team control in its backcourt, a player shall not cause the ball to go from backcourt to frontcourt and return to backcourt, without the ball touching a player in the frontcourt, such that he/she or a teammate is the first to touch it in the backcourt.

Backcourt ART. 3 3 Exceptions: –Jump Ball, Throw-in, Defense: a player may legally jump from his/her frontcourt, secure control of the ball with both feet off the floor and return to the floor with one or both feet in the backcourt. The player may make a normal landing and it makes no difference whether the first foot down is in the frontcourt or backcourt.

Questions

Backcourt - Summary ART. 1 – Last to touch in frontcourt Not be 1 st to touch in backcourt. ART. 2 - Back-Front-Back Not be 1 st to touch in backcourt. ART. 3 – Jump Ball/Throw-in/Defense May jump, catch in frontcourt and land in backcourt

Backcourt Team A has the ball in its front court. –A1 passes the ball to A2. –B1 deflects the pass off of A1, and the ball goes into the back court. –A3 picks the ball up in the back court. Is this Backcourt?

Backcourt – ART.3 During a jump ball, A1 taps the ball. A2 takes off from Team A's frontcourt and catches the ball while in the air and lands with one foot in frontcourt and one foot in backcourt. (Case 9.9.1B) Is this Backcourt?

Back Court – Throw-in Player muffs Throw-in Back Court - Play 1Play 1 Defensive Exception Back Court – Play 2Play 2

Backcourt – Throw-in Team A is awarded a throw-in near the division line. A2 jumps from Team A's frontcourt, catches the ball in the air and lands in the backcourt. –Is this Backcourt?

Backcourt – Throw-ins Team A is awarded a throw-in near the division line. A1's throw-in is deflected by B1; A2 jumps from Team A's frontcourt, catches the ball in the air and lands in the backcourt. ( Case 9.9.1D)

Backcourt – Throw-ins RULING: Backcourt violation on Team A. The throw-in ends when it is legally touched by B1. A2 gains player and team control in the air after having left the floor from Team A's frontcourt, therefore having frontcourt status. As soon as A2 lands in the backcourt, he/she has committed a backcourt violation. The exception granted during a throw-in ends when the throw-in ends and is only for the player making the initial touch on the ball. (9-9-3)
