 Umpire  Referee  Judge  Trail referee  Assistant referee  Line judge  Scorer  Time keeper  TMO  Video referee  Touch judge  Field Judge = cricket / netball / tennis = football / rugby / hockey = gymnastics / diving = basketball = football = tennis / badminton = basketball / netball = cricket = rugby (league & union) = athletics (field events) From the list of officials below can you tell me which sports they relate to (it can be more than 1).

There are 2 categories of officials – these are: Performance controllers:  Regulate the sport on or close to the action, e.g. rugby, football or basketball. Performance managers:  Measure the competitors against standards, e.g. Gymnasts, long jumpers or snooker players. What’s the difference?

What is the difference? Role = “A prescribed or expected behaviour associated with a particular position or status in a group or organization”behaviourassociatedpositionstatusgrouporganization e.g. judge Responsibilities = “A duty or obligation to satisfactorily perform or complete a task (assigned by someone, or created by one's own promise or circumstances) that one must fulfill, and which has a consequent penalty for failure”dutyobligation performcompletetaskownpromisepenaltyfailure e.g. applying the rules of the sport.

What are the roles of an official?  Arbiter  Professional  Judge  Communicator  Safety officer  Presenter  Score keeper  Timekeeper Task: What is the difference between these roles? Write a brief description of what you think each of the roles opposite mean for an official and what that involves! 5mins - GO!!

D1 = a) Compare and contrast the officials from football and basketball  How are they similar / different? Yes/ no? why?  Do they do the same roles / responsibilities – yes / no? how and why? b) How could each sport be improved in terms of: 1. Rules & regulations 2. Roles & responsibilities of the officials 3. Scoring systems

Officials roles: Football and basketball officials all do the same roles but how they perform these roles is where they differ at times. (provide sports examples for your answers e.g. the official that does this) 1. Arbiter = Same……how & why? 2. Judge = different …how & why? 3. Professional = same …. how &why? 4. Communicator = same …how & why? 5. Presenter = different … how & why? 6. Safety officer = same …. how & why? 7. Score / time keeper = different ……how & why?

Officials responsibilities: Football and basketball officials all have the same responsibilities but how they perform these responsibilities is where they differ at times. (provide sports examples for your answers e.g. the official that does this) 1. Apply the rules = Same……how & why? 2. Health & safety = different …how & why? 3. Fitness (physical / mental) = same …. how &why? 4. Keep up to date = same …how & why? 5. Communicate info = same … how & why? 6. Establish relationships = same ……how & why?
