German The Future Tense This PowerPoint was created by Matthew Vernon, here.here

What is the Future Tense? You use the future tense when you are describing something that you will do. I am going to play football. I will play football. Both of these sentences will use the future tense.

How to form the Future Tense. You have to use the verb ‘werden’ as your ‘auxiliary verb’. That’s a posh way of saying a ‘second verb’. You then add your main verb to the end of your sentence in its infinitive, this means its original, unchanged form.

werden: its endings. PersonVerb endingsMeaning ichwerdeI will… I am going… duwirstYou will… you are going… er/sie/eswirdHe/she/it will… wirwerdenWe will… ihrwerdetYou (lot) will… (friendly pl) SiewerdenYou will… (polite pl) siewerdenThey will…

Adding your second verb To construct your sentence, you have to start with the ‘werden’ bit. Ich werde… Then you add your context. Ich werde Fußball… Then you add your main verb. Ich werde Fußball spielen.

Things to ensure… Make sure that your ‘main verb’ goes to the end of the sentence/clause and that the ‘werden’ always come second in your sentence. Although you don’t learn ‘ihr’, the friendly plural of ‘you’, it is used in Germany and you really should learn its endings.

Final though. When you’re practising a new tense, then make sure that you are confident. Go out and practise using it regularly with friends, fellow students/ learners and with teachers. Eventually, it will become a piece of cake.

I hope that helped! Matthew Vernon
