GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 MAIN CONCLUSIONS after June study visit in Milan whichever application of groundwater flow and transport model it must consider like reference base a regional study; the objective declared from the City of St. Petersburg consists in resolving problems of three pilot areas; the Province of Milan proposal consists in applying to local scale the SoilGIS model (simplification of Modflow calculation code), with the following implementations: ability to modelling more than one layer and to permit the interactions between different aquifers and superficial water bodies; The GWFM working group has the necessity of having data, even if schematic, to begin to trace a first hydrogeological study of regional scale and pilot areas Complete information about pilot areas will be ready in November in order to allow the Province of Milan to make a preliminary study of groundwater flow

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 GANTT diagram

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 subsequently St. Petersburg, in order to allow the Province of Milan to make a preliminary study of groundwater flow, must supply, as soon as possible, for the chosen area the following data (when is possible as shape file), also schematic and simplified (some requested data are supplied with Province of Milan examples): 1.pilot area problems organization (reports, studies, communications to population, articles, etc); 2.pilot area map and St. Petersburg map; 3.pilot area stratigraphic scheme with stratigraphic column; 4.hydrogeological crossed sections, at least 2 for every site with their localization on pilot area map; 5. piezometric maps for each aquifer: water table (unconfined aquifer) and piezometric level maps (confined aquifer); 6. presence of connections between aquifers; 7. hydrogeological units conducibility as indicated to point 3. In the event in which the conductivity values were not available it should be useful to have pumping test results in order to estimate the value of K; 8. pilot area hydrography and connections with aquifers; 9. quantitative and qualitative analyses of aquifers monitoring net.

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 SHUVALOVO area

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 SOIL-GIS now Main features Software GIS for forecast modelling of flux and pollutant’s transport in aquifer ArcView 3 extension developed by GECOsistema srl, requires ArcView Spatial Analyst Contains these model interfaces: USGS MODFLOW 2000, USEPA MT3D-MS, USEPA HSSM 1.03, USEPA VLEACH 2.2 All models have simplifications Contains explorative modelling tools

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 Modflow 2000 Main simplifications: Single layer aquifer Discretization domain in constant dimension rectangular cells Boundary conditions given by constant border piezometric head Steady flow with an only stress period External forcing limited to wells and drains Rivers as constant head cells

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 MT3D-MS Base assumption: a pollutant does not significantly change the flow field which can be imported by Modflow Main simplifications: Only one chemical species for each simulation Constant dispersion Constant reaction kinetics’ parameters Boundary condition given by constant border concentrations

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 Milan – Bicocca University task Analysis of geological data for GWFM

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 to implement two functions in SOIL-GIS: include a multi-layer modelling capability; include an explicit representation of river-aquifer interaction (“river package” in Modflow 2000)‏. GECOsistema task SOIL-GIS The new version of SOIL-GIS will be ready within the end of January 2007

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 Boundary conditions: no flow, river, sea Piezometric head Permeability Aquifer’s top Aquifer’s bottom Initial concentration Porosity Bulk density Total recharge Withdrawals INDISPENSABLE DATA FLOW TRANSPORT The data input must be supplied for every layer that we want to modelling. The porosity and permeability values are considered uniform on all the layer thickness while they can change in x and y directions. Data input for Soil-GIS (Regional scale and Shuvalovo area)

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October Parco della lambretta

GeoInforM Project - LIFE06 TCY/ROS/ Steering Committee – St. Petersburg, October 2007 The “Amici del Metrobosco - Parco della Lambretta” Committee ( is promoting a concept contest, "a tree today, a wood tomorrow" This competition is aimed at collecting proposals for the future “Parco della Lambretta”, within the Metrobosco project, promoted by the Province of Milan. The promoters aim at stimulating the creativity and curiosity of students of Italian and foreign faculties of Architecture, Engineering (Construction/Architecture Engineering, Environment Engineering) and Science (Natural Science, Earth Sciences, Environment Sciences, Geology). Future architects, developers or designers are therefore invited to formulate proposals and ideas to create the public park in via Rubattino, Milano, partially covering the area where the Innocenti production plants were located until only a few years ago.
