Races of P. graminis f. sp. tritici with virulence to Sr13 and Sr9e Olivera PD, Yahyaoui A, Badebo A, Rattu A, Rouse M, Ward R, Singh R, Fetch T, and Jin Y North American Rust Workshop St. Paul - June 12, 2011

Stem Rust Resistance in Durum ● Durum wheat of North America has a higher frequency of resistance to TTKSK than common wheat to TTKSK than common wheat ● We postulated that resistance to TTKSK in durum is mostly due to Sr13 ● When durum resistant selections were evaluated in Debre Zeit, many were evaluated in Debre Zeit, many became susceptible to stem rust became susceptible to stem rust ● Hypothesis: stem rust races in Debre Zeit may possess a virulence combination may possess a virulence combination that overcome the TTKSK resistance that overcome the TTKSK resistance Debre Zeit

Race Identification ● Samples - 41 samples of infected stems collected at Debre - 41 samples of infected stems collected at Debre Zeit stem rust screening nursery in 2009 Zeit stem rust screening nursery in 2009 ● 38 single pustule isolates - race-typed based on the NA differential set - race-typed based on the NA differential set - characterized on a set of 24 additional - characterized on a set of 24 additional resistant lines resistant lines ● Races: - 18 IsolatesTTKSK - 18 IsolatesTTKSK - 12 IsolatesJRCQC - 12 IsolatesJRCQC - 4 IsolatesTRTTF - 4 IsolatesTRTTF

Race TRTTF ● Race TRTTF was first found in a collection from Yemen in 2006 ● TRTTF is similar to race RRTTF that was found from stem rust collections from Pakistan collections from Pakistan ● Race RRTTF is avirulent to Sr9e and 1AL.1RS translocation
