S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research REPORTING OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: “UNPUBLISHED WORK DOES NOT EXIST!” Željko Andreić Ruđer Bošković Institute, div. of Materials physics, Thin Films Laboratory, Bijenička 54, Zagreb, Croatia

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research Scientific research is a long and tedious job. But, it is also interesting and funny...

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research What follows is long and tedious data reduction and analysis… sometimes with unexpected side effects...

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research Finally, all conclusions are drawn, and the scientist is happy. His research is finished, he knows all the results and wants to go for a new research...

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research STOP! THE MOST IMPORTANT (and usually the most boring) PART OF THE JOB STILL HAS TO BE DONE!

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research THE RESUTS HAVE TO BE REPORTED TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMUNITY!!!

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research First and preliminary results are reported on scientific meetings Important and thoroughly proved results are published as papers in scientific magazines

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research 1. Make literature research. You must know what has been done by others before 2. Rethink your results, what is there new and important? 3. Be sure what you want to say and why 4. Choose the way of presentation: paper, talk, poster 5. Check the space (number of pages, or time) you can use for it 6. GOTO 2 and check it all once again RULES OF SUCCESSFUL REPORTING:

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research 1. Study the guidelines for authors carefully 2. Choose the way of presentation: paper, or talk 3. Write the abstract and register for the conference 4. If the abstract is accepted proceed. Otherwise, choose another conference! STEP ONE FOR POSTER AND TALK:

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research THE MOST COMMON: POSTER PRESENTATION YOU YOUR PUBLIC YOUR BEAUTIFULL POSTER!

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research POSTER IS A VISUAL MEDIUM!!! text and tables should be reduced to minimum use graphs and pictures MAKE IT BIG! people look at it from a distance of several meters!!! A0 (ca. 90x110 cm) is the usual size

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research POSTER MUST BE INFORMATIVE thus, use BIG fonts! 40 pt for title 28 for text 24 for legends figures 20x20 cm minimum use minimum of text; the author (YOU!) explains the poster titles and captions must be short and attractive POSTER MUST BE INFORMATIVE my address comes here! This is a magnifier! Use to see small objects! Do not use too small fonts! (Do not use too small fonts!) Graphs must be simple and informative

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research BE CAREFULL WITH THE COLORS! POSTER MUST BE INFORMATIVE my address comes here! This is a magnifier! Use to see small objects! Do not use too small fonts! (Do not use too small fonts!) Graphs must be simple and informative POSTER MUST BE INFORMATIVE my address comes here! This is a magnifier! Use to see small objects! Do not use too small fonts! (Do not use too small fonts!) Graphs must be simple and informative B&W IS DULL… but TOO MUCH COLOR IS BAD!

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research POSTER MUST BE INFORMATIVE my address comes here! This is a magnifier! Use to see small objects! Do not use too small fonts! Graphs must be simple and informative THIS LOOKS BETTER, DOESN’T IT?

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research TALK

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research TALK IS DIRECT COMMUNICATION TO THE PUBLIC! preferred to poster, if possible VERY TIGHT TIME LIMITS, min usually, INCLUDING discussion!!! DO NOT break the time limits! Modern ways of doing it: presentations, color foils use foils only if presentation is not possible!

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research HOW TO PREPARE A TALK: 1. Study the guidelines for authors carefully 2. Decide what will you report in the short time you have 3. Prepare a sketch of the presentation; how many slides and what should be shown on each of them 4. NOTE: 1 slide per minute is the speed limit! 5. GOTO 1 several times 6. Make the foils 7. GIVE the talk to friends, or yourself, and CHECK the time 8. GOTO 6 until time is OK and the talk is nice

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER still the most important way of reporting often can be submitted as a conference paper that accompanies poster or talk (you HAVE TO participate at the conference!)

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – STEP 1 1. Choose the type of the paper (letter, short communication, article) 2. Decide to which magazine the paper will be sent 3. Study the guidelines for authors throughly

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – STEP 2 4. Put your results in graphical form and write the body of the article arround them 5. Repeat step 4 modifying the graphics and the text until you are satisfied with it (usually x!)

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – STEP 3 6. Read it once again! 7. Next, write the intoduction and add the references 8. Add the discussion and the conclusion 9. GOTO 6 and repeat until satisfied (but be reasonable!)

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – STEP Read it once again! 11. Finally, write the abstract and the acknowlegments 12. Check the complete paper for errors, wrong ref. numbers etc. 13. Check if the style is in accordance to the guidelines

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – STEP Write the letter to the editor 15. Submit! …and wait for the answer…wait...

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – THE ANSWER IS “REFUSED” NO PANIC! 1. Read the comments of the referees carefully 2. Accept comments you think are OK, ignore the others, and modify your article accordingly 3. Choose another magazine, adapt the style and submit there.

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – THE ANSWER IS “MODIFY” IT IS OK! 1. Read the comments of the referees carefully 2. Accept comments you think are OK, ignore the others, and modify your article accordingly 3. Write the letter to the editor and explain your modifications and resubmit !+?

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research PAPER – THE ANSWER IS “ACCEPTED” YOU WON! The paper will be published! Only, this usually happens to someone else….

S3 2002:Željko Andreić -- Reporting of scientific research Now, you start again from the beginning… enjoy the job… I go fishing…
