Sports literacy Do you love sport? Then this is for you! We will be looking at how people in sports communicate – journalists, coaches, players, commentators and fans – through both spoken and written texts. We will be having some guests come in to speak to the group as well!

Writing for Children Do you have a favourite story from when you were little? What is it about that story that sticks in your mind? Is it the pictures, the rhyme, the content, the ending of the story that made it a favourite? Would you enjoy researching what makes a good story for young children? Would you like to write your own story suitable for young children? Would you then like to read it to children in a local primary school and experience their reactions to it? Could you be the next budding children story writer? You never know, your story may end up being someone’s favourite story!

English and the Gaming World Warning: This elective is not about playing games! The course will be looking at how English as a subject can prepare people for a career in gaming. Which English skills would you need to become a game critic or a game designer? As part of the course, you will discuss game reviews and write/present your own. You will also be introduced to Game Development, looking specifically at how setting, plot and characters are developed, with a view to developing your own game concept. And you might even meet some professional game developers (subject to availability)! The course might also explore other aspects of gaming, such as how it has changed the way we think and learn.

Talk Like an Anglo Saxon! How has language evolved over the last 1500 years or so? This course will explore the history of language through lots of interesting resources – including Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales - and involve group performances (maybe even to an outside audience!)
