Allowed the fed. govt. to pay Native Americans to move west. b Congress creates Indian Territory.  Cherokee refuse, take Georgia to Court (Worcester v. Georgia) How Jackson’s presidency affected Native Americans.

C11 S2 Conflicts Over Land  Trail of Tears a. Treaty of New Echota, gave Jackson legal grounds to remove the Cherokee.  1838 General Winfield Scott, led 7,000 troops began removal of the Cherokee Nation. a. 2,000 died in camps waiting to be moved. b. 2,000 died along the way. c. Most of the deaths were the very young or the very old.
