FROM ASPIRATION TO REALITY FOR ALL Part 1: MATERNITY PROTECTION AT WORK: THE BASICS Mod. 3 Maternity Protection at work: Why is it important? 6 Improving maternal and child health Maternity protection helps to preserve maternal and child health in several ways  Proper maternity leave improves perinatal health and the development of the child, ultimately lowering child mortality  It protects women from health hazards before, during and after pregnancy, ultimately lowering maternal mortality  Cash benefits for medical care and leave with benefits in case of illness or complications are recognized as an important part of maternity protection  It allows women to breastfeed for an appropriate amount of time

FROM ASPIRATION TO REALITY FOR ALL Part 1: MATERNITY PROTECTION AT WORK: THE BASICS Mod. 3 Maternity Protection at work: Why is it important? 7 Economic growth and poverty reduction Maternity protection (along with childcare services) makes economic sense because:  It strengthens women's attachment to the labour market  It facilitates access for more women to the labour market  It is more likely that women will use their skills and education efficiently  It helps to decrease absenteeism, increase morale and loyalty and offers a healthier working environment  It has positive effects on women and children's health, which creates a more efficient and productive labour force  It helps women to save on milk substitute costs by breastfeeding  It helps to alleviate poverty through gender equality and economic security for women

It is also a core component of social protection  Maternity protection is a pre-condition for gender equality, which is central to the realization of Decent Work

Key points 10  Maternity protection is linked to the achievement of major rights and development objectives.  It provides the fundamental human right for women of reproductive age to work without threat of discrimination, to work in conditions of economic security and equal opportunity, and to benefit from just and decent working conditions.  It is a precondition for realizing gender equality.  It contributes to maternal and child health.  It is part and parcel of the Decent Work Agenda.  Maternity protection contributes to the achievement of the MDGs, in particular to MDG 1 on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, MDG 3 on promoting gender equality and empowering women, MDG 4 on reducing child mortality, MDG 5 on improving maternal health and MDG 6 on combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
