Rationale  When students submit their assignments via Chalk & Wire, the next step is for the assignments to be assessed (on Chalk & Wire) by the appropriate Education faculty members.  Assessments of assignments on Chalk & Wire are essential to the continued reaccreditation of the Salem State College’s School of Education by the Department of Education (DOE), as well as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Logging into Chalk & Wire 1)On your computer’s Desktop or “Start Menu”, open up an Internet browser, such as: Internet Explorer ® ORMozilla Firefox ® 2) In the address bar of the Internet browser, type in the following URL: Image Sources: 4

This is the Login Page that you should see. 5

Enter your USER ID and PASSWORD. Then, click the “Login” button. Your USER ID is the first initial of your first name, followed by your full last name. If you are a NEW assessor, enter your temporary password. Otherwise, enter your personalized password. 6

This is the Main Screen, otherwise known as the “Dashboard”. This screen gives you an overview of your Chalk & Wire account, such as any pending assessments, C&W news flashes, etc. It is highly recommended that you change your password (if you are currently using the temporary password) to protect the privacy of your C&W account. Click on “Change Password” if you need to change your password. 7

If you need to change your password, your password MUST be at least 6 characters in length. After you enter your information, click on “Change”. 8

Creating Student Groups Click on the “My Assessments” tab. 9

Click on “Add new student group”. 10

In the “Name” field, type in the education course number you are representing, followed by the current semester. For example, if you were teaching the course, “The Premise of the School”, during the Fall 2009 semester, you would type “EDU 100 Fall 2009” into that field. 11

Select the students (one at a time) that are enrolled in your course from the “Users Available” list. Students are listed in alphabetical order by LAST NAME. After selecting an individual student, click on the “>>” button, and repeat this procedure for each student in your course. 12

When you are finished, click on “Save”. 13

The message, “Group has been saved”, will appear. Click on the “Return” button. 14

Your student group is now listed. If you need to add another student group for another course, click on “Add new student group” and repeat the procedure, starting with Slide #10. 15

Assessment of Student Work  Now that you have created student groups for your course(s), you need to communicate to your students in your course(s) of what assignment(s) need to be submitted to you via Chalk & Wire.  It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that your students submit work to you on Chalk & Wire before you assess their assignment(s).  When you are ready to assess student work that has been submitted, you need to first log onto Chalk & Wire, and then click on the “My Assessments” tab. 16 Image Source: Microsoft Office 2007 ClipArt Gallery

This area shows the students who (at the present time) have submitted work to you for assessment. 17

Click on the student’s name to view the assignments he / she has submitted to you. 18

This screen shows the assignments that the student currently has submitted to you. 19

Click on “Assess” next to the assignment you wish to assess. 20

Click on the document link to view the work submitted for the assignment. It will open in its associated application (i.e. Microsoft Word, etc.). When you are finished viewing the work, close or minimize the document. 21

Click on “Start Assessment” to begin assessing the work. 22

Click on the appropriate rating, based on the corresponding criterion. Click on “Next” to continue the assessment. 23

This screen will appear when you have successfully completed the assessment. Click on “Continue”. 24

If the student has submitted multiple assignments, the next assignment will appear. If you do not wish to assess the assignment at this time, click on “Exit”, located in the top right-hand corner. Otherwise, you may repeat the assessment procedure, starting with Slide #21. 25

You may now assess submitted work for another student by clicking on the student’s name. You may also view the assessments you have completed for a particular student by clicking on the student’s name. 26

This is a sample Student Results page. 27

Manual Assessments  Sometimes it might be necessary to perform a manual assessment if a student has not submitted assignments via Chalk & Wire.  PPAs (Preservice Performance Assessments) and SIOPs (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocols) are usually manual assessments.  Manual assessments are performed ONLY for students who have not (or for some reason, cannot) submit work via Chalk & Wire. 28 Image Source: Microsoft Office 2007 ClipArt Gallery

Click on “Show Students” for the appropriate student group. 29

Click on “Enter Assessments Manually”. 30

Select the appropriate department (“Education” for undergraduate courses or “Graduate” for graduate courses). 31

Select the appropriate rubric that pertains to your course number and assignment. 32

Click on “Continue”. 33

Click on a student who DID NOT submit work for the assignment on Chalk & Wire. Please Note: All students within the course (group) are listed. This list DOES NOT necessarily indicate which students did or did not submit a particular assignment via Chalk & Wire. 34

Select the appropriate ratings from the drop- down menus for EACH criterion. 35

If necessary, click on another student who DID NOT submit the assignment via Chalk & Wire and enter the appropriate ratings. When you are completely finished entering assessments for students who did not submit the assignment via C&W, be sure to click on “Save”. 36

The message “Your assessment has been recorded” appears. Click on “Return”. 37

To end your current C&W session, click “Log Out”. If you need to perform manual assessments for another class, click on the “My Assessments” tab and repeat the procedure, starting from Slide #29. 38
