GET your verb: ge-verb-t your verb: put a ge-t around your verb. 3. Move your geverbt verb to end of the sentence. 4. You’ve got it! Now speak of thing from long ago!

Well, there are some exceptions… …we will talk about them later.

Stem changing verbs… …for example. When then stem of the stem changing verb is regular (like aufmachen-to open) they are very similar… Ich mache die Tür auf.

Stem changing verbs… First, haben replaces the conjugated verb. Ich mache die Tür auf.habe mache

Stem changing verbs… Second, you GET the verb (geverbt the verb, put a ‘ge-t’ around the verb) Ich mache die Tür auf.habe gemacht

Stem changing verbs… Third, the geverbt verb goes to the end. Ich mache die Tür auf.habe gemacht

Stem changing verbs… AND THEN!!!!! The geverbt verb RECONNECTS to the prefix! Ich mache die Tür aufhabegemacht.

Stem changing verbs… Now you have the past tense for stem changing verbs. Ich mache die Tür aufhabegemacht.
