3.2Saves system administration time and money No matter how old, deleted files can be recovered immediately –(Common configuration of back server allows from 6 to 12 months of current online data storage) Snapshot EFB backup server can rebuild a Win-98 PC in approx. 1 minute and Win-XP in approx. 10 minutes. Linux, Unix and NT servers can also be restored fast. Snapshot EFB restore is not restricted by introduction of new hardware. The system administrator is informed by of the result of the daily backup. No physical intervention is required. Users can restore their own lost files, without the need for system administrator intervention

3.3Fast disaster recovery (1) There are two ways to restore: –Direct restore from snapshot to previous hardware configuration –After installation of basic OS, use snapshot to put back all updates, non- OS-programs and all other files. In both cases the restore will include any updates or patches made to the OS since the original software was purchased With Snapshot EFB, disaster recovery is no longer a nightmare…

3.3Fast disaster recovery (2) Example: A lost or stolen Laptop can be restored in approx. 1 minute (Win 98) and approx. 10 minutes (XP). –Identical machine means exact restore. No surprises. –No loss of income. Continuation of work in a matter of minutes. Backup Server

3.4Supports smooth migration to new platforms Migration to new Operating System or Hardware –Significantly faster upgrade to new OS or Hardware. After OS or hardware upgrade is done, multiple computers can have selective restore of non OS related software and data at the same time. –Restoration is fast, due to random access to the files, no slow sequential access. Backup Hardware –When upgrading tape capacity, all old tapes, up to the last full backup, need to be restored, before the new tape drive is installed. After the installation, all previous tapes will often become unreadable. –Where a tape drive is replaced, there is no guarantee that the tapes will be readable with the new drive (due to head alignment of the old drive).

Backup Server Internet/VPN 3.5Efficient online backup of remote sites Remote sites can now easily be included in the daily backup, without intervention by system administrator; –First, store copies of the OS systems in use and common programs (MS Office, MSIE, Outlook etc) on the Snapshot backup server, then do a full backup of the remote sites. –This way many of the files on the remote computers will not have to be backed up, as they will already have been backed up – thus greatly reducing the volume of data to be backed up. Restoration of lost data can also be done via remote access. –Actual backups are reduced to small amounts of data only. Approx. 10% of normal backup volume.

3.6Reliability of Tape and CD-Rom Known problems with CD/DVD backup: –Industry statistics show that there is a high rate of unreliability in CD recording/read back. Some reports state that up to 40% of CDs are unreadable after 2 years. Known problems with tape backups: –Misalignment of tape head can make tape unreadable; –Constant use of tapes requires them to be replaced annually at great cost; –Adversely affected by climatic conditions; –Require multiple volumes, where backup volume exceeds the capacity of one tape. This may necessitate introduction of expensive automatic tape changer; –Constant increase in hard disk capacity and reduction in purchase costs outstrips capacity of tapes.

3.6Reliability (Snapshot EFB hard disks) Snapshot EFB uses hard disks –Data is backed up in raid style to multiple disks –Fire wire removable hard disks are used for duplication of data for off- site storage –Rotation of hard disks can be determined by the user 2nd IDE Hot Swap in Transit 3rd IDE Hot Swap in off site storage Basic Snapshot EFB Server has: 1 Internal IDE which is never removed 1 Hot Swap FireWire Drive at all times Backup Server

3.7Full versus incremental backup For maximum security and fast restoration a full backup should always be done – Snapshot EFB does! ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Tapes and CDs invite users to do incremental backups due to backup media capacity limitations. This leads to the following problems: –To restore a lost file may require sequential reading of multiple tapes requiring lengthy involvement of the system administrator. (Searching for the right tape or CD) –Immediate restoration of one or more computer(s) from tape or CD is not possible.
