Timed WritingProcess Writing

Everyone performs tasks every day whether they are as simple as making breakfast or as difficult as repairing a bicycle. To complete these tasks, there is a process that must be done to do it successfully. Think of a task you do well. Write an essay in which you explain the process it takes to complete the task successfully. Imagine that the reader of your essay has never done this task before and needs to know each step of the process.

Example: Choosing a task you do very well, what steps would a person take to successfully complete the task?

1. Read prompt and underline key words/ideas 2. Re-write the prompt in your own words in question form

Planning Creating an outline for your essay

You should devote 1/6 of your time to pre-writing strategies that means if you have an hour you need to spend 10 minutes dissecting the prompt & creating an outline An essay that is not planned is disorganized. SPEND THE TIME TO PLAN – IT’S WORTH IT

Directions: Choose an essay prompt and use the 2 strategies to dissect it 1. Choose a character from a story with which you are very familiar. Analyze this character’s development and discuss how he/she changes over the course of the story. Be sure to give specific examples. 2. Compare and contrast the decade of the 1950’s and the decade of the 1960s with respect to all of the following: civil rights, social conformity and foreign affairs. 3. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Beowulf with other epics you have read.

In Anglo-Saxon society there were codes to follow. One of these codes was the heroic code, which stated that a man must show strength, courage, and loyalty. Many characters in the epic poem Beowulf either exemplify or fail to meet this code. Write an essay evaluating how a character does or does not meet the three elements of the Heroic code.

In Anglo-Saxon society there were codes one had to follow, one being the heroic code; which stated that a man must show strength, courage, and loyalty. Many characters in the epic poem Beowulf either exemplify or fail to meet this code. Write an essay evaluating how a character does or does not meet the three elements of the Heroic code. (Based on what you have read so far)

 How do you believe Beowulf follows/does not follow the heroic code set by the Anglo Saxons?  How do you believe Grendel goes against the heroic code of the Anglo Saxons?  Or you can choose another character. (Unferth, Hrothgar – these are the only other main characters we have really had a chance to get to know so far)

 Parts Required for a Timed Essay

Learning Target Students will understand the different components that are required in an essay. Students will understand how to effectively outline an essay. Essential Questions: What elements do effective writers use in their essays? Why is planning an essay important?

I can practice outlining an essay using an example of a student essay (work backwards)

I. Introduction I. Supporting Paragraph I I. Supporting Paragraph II I. Supporting Paragraph III II. Conclusion

 When doing any form of writing you need to organize your thoughts.  You need to know What you are going to say, WHEN you are going to say it, and HOW you are going to say it.  Outlines don’t have to include every detail you are going to use. Rather it should be used as a “blueprint” for the essay you are going to build.

Task: (Working Backwards) o Get with group (4 people) o Read student sample essay Individually o Together From what you read, create an outline together – use the Outline Notes to help you find all of the elements needed. Write on Poster Board neatly What do you think their outline looked like before they wrote the essay? REMEMBER – AN OUTLINE DOES NOT INCLUDE EVERY SINGLE DETAIL that an essay does

Group One: Adrian, Gibran, Hannah, Erick, Michelle Group Two: Luis, Mariel, Weston, Ambrose, Wade Group Three: Austin, Dabria, Michael, David, Alondra Group Four: Raven, Nick, Carlos, Tany, Kassidi, Group Five: Riley, Mingmar, Natalie, Kiefer, Morgan Group Six: Noah, Jose, Devin, Javier, Jeromy

In Anglo-Saxon society there were codes to follow. One of these codes was the heroic code, which stated that a man must show strength, courage, and loyalty. Many characters in the epic poem Beowulf either exemplify or fail to meet this code. Write an essay evaluating how a character (s) does or does not meet the three elements of the Heroic code.

 On your outline Sheet o At the top: Write which character or characters you will be discussing o Re-write the prompt in YOUR OWN WORDS  Next, come up with your thesis statement: (1- 2 sentences that come at END of INTRO) o what will you discuss in your essay? What will you be trying to prove?  Come up with your 3 topic sentences: o What will your 3 body paragraphs be discussing? REMEMBER An outline does NOT have to include complete sentences – just ideas It SHOULD include complete quotes that you plan to use
